The Bodensee in SE Germany

We will be located halfway between Munich and Zurich, about 40 minutes east of Lindau, Germany for a week long stay next summer. Does anyone have experience visiting the towns along The Bodensee and have personal recommendations for sightseeing/recreating?
thanks -
Dale

Dale,
If you'll have a car at your disposal, I can offer some suggestions for day trips that may be of interest to you. Feel free to Email me directly. Who is "we", you and spouse? or will you have youngsters with you as well? Do you have specific interests? Any language proficiency?

I think only in Germany is it the Bodensee, the most well known name is Lake Constance, or Konstanz. This is a lovely area, bordering Suisse, Germany and touching on Austria. Hike or bike is our recommendation.

Look on your map and find the island of Mainau (pronounced my-now), on the south side of the lake. It's a beautiful garden where you can spend a wonderful time looking at the flowers and blooming shrubs. In spring, it's a huge collection of azaleas. I believe you will even find palm trees there. It's a sheltered corner of Germany where all sorts of interesting flowers are found only there. From Mainau, head west and visit the falls of the Rhein at Schaffhausen--very exciting. One place we missed on Lake Constance was the town where Count Zeppelin built and operated his airships. I understand there is an interesting museum all about zeppelins in this town. Can't remember its name. Friedrichshafen?

I forgot to mention visiting the Benedictine abbey of Ottobeuren while you are there. Huge place, few visitors, gorgeous rococo architecture with tons of gold. Visit the city of Ulm on the Danube, with its cathedral--completely intact from the war and boasting the tallest steeples in the world. Have lunch in the town hall or rathskeller. If it looks familiar, you will be right. You have seen it on TV showing scenes from Nazi times. Field Marshall Rommel's funeral was held there, after he was murdered by the Gestapo (or, if you prefer, permitted to commit suicide).

Hi!
This area is really an unknown gem. We "toured" the eastern coastline about a year ago and enjoyed it very much. We stayed in Ueberlingen, which is very nice and has a great "gelateria" right in the middle of town. Meersburg, with its castles and its old town is one of the highlights. Also, we visited the monastery/palace at Salem, and the baroque church of Birnau(??). Unfortunatley, we didn't see the museum in Friedrichshafen, but if you're insterested in aeronautics it should be very nice. Mainau was also very nice, admission is a little pricey, but it was worth seeing all the gardens. And we also visited Lindau.
Other sights that are supposed to be nice are Reichenau Island, Stein am Rhein (known as the Rothenburg of Switzerland) and St. Gallen.
Enjoy your trip!
