Telephone Card for Italy

When we were in Paris, I paid a few Euros for a telephone card to make some local calls from our apartment, and to make a couple of calls back to the States. It wasn't very expensive at all.

What's the telephone system like in Italy for doing the same sort of thing. I would just want to make a couple of calls to confirm or make some reservations, and I will need to call back to the States on a couple of occasions.

For example, are there public telephones where you put in your telephone card to make calls, and it debits the card based on the units of usage?

You can buy inexpensive phone cards at tobacco shops in Italy, and they will work from public phone booths. I can't remember the cost last year, but I know it wasn't expensive, and one card allowed me to make a call each to our three daughters in the US. I'm sure others will be able to give you more specific information.

The Italian phone cards for use in the pay phones purchased at the Tobacchi are the best way to go you just have to remember you have to break off the top corner to fit and activate them for use in the pay phones. ask the seller how to use it . They come in 2.5 ,5, 10, 15, 20 euro I got a 5 euro card and had alot of time to call back to the states to tell all that we arrived safe and all that stuff . and still hade time left

Thanks for the info.

If I'm not mistaken, to call the States from a pay phone in Italy, you would have to dial 001-area code-telephone number? Can someone please confirm.

Hi Budman,

Go to http://kropla.com/dialcode.htm

It will tell you what number to dial to get out of a country, and what number to dial to get into a country.

Thanks ira.

Leave it to the French -- they have 5 different IDD Prefixes. When in France, you've got to know what system you are on?
