Switzerland: late June or mid July?

Hi all. In terms of weather/crowds, generally, is later in June or mid-July a better time to go?

We want to go to the Berner Oberland, so we would prefer sunny (and perfect!) weather.

When to the Swiss kids get out of school? We were in London in late June/early July and did not find it very crowded. Part of the reason, I believe, is b/c the English kids were still in school.

Weather is hard to predict-- you can just go with averages. We were in the Bernese Oberland late June to 2nd week of July and it was cool and cloudy for most of our stay. Especially high up in the mountains, there was drizzle and rain. We were wearing sweaters when we went to the Jungfraujoch.

I believe summer vacation in Swiss schools start first week of July.

This was not a year to judge good weather in Switzerland. If you have to pick on the other, late June or mid July, I would put numbers in a hat. Close my eyes, and pick one. You cannot pick with any degree of assuredness.

The Swiss school kids in the Berner Oberland will not make much of a difference locally.

In both those months in Switzerland... I have been in everything from a heatwave (90+F) to thunder & lightening storms, to perfectly pleasant mild weather. It's quite unpredictable.

Hi karens,

I'd pick late June for better weather -- on average (without accounting for recent strangeness) and fewer crowds.

Here's something that you haven't mentioned -- the wildflowers will be out in June, not in July. It's incredibly lovely to see fields covered in yellow wildflowers!

Agree with s (Hi!) as usual. Even at higher and highest elevations like the Upper Engadine I always prefered late June. Yes, the wildflowers are more beautiful in June, the glaciers still have more snow (usually, lol) and look more beautiful. No crowds, except for really top spots.
