For what?

Who/how many are you?

What are your interests?

How much time do you have?

Budget?

Give us a clue to work with if you expect anyone to take the time to respond.

Get the Michelin Green Guide for Switzerland. It assumes car travel, but public transportation covers the country very well.

Hi mmcgriff,
Welcome to Fodors!

You will not get many useful responses to a question like yours with out some additional information. In addition to nytraveler's questions we need to know what time of year you are planning to visit, will you use public transportation or will you have a car. Where are you coming from? Is Switzerland one segment of a bigger trip?

Grab a guidebook or two and narrow it down a bit and then come back here to ask more specific questions. You will get a lot more useful info that way.

Best place to visit, your local bookstore or library for a Fodors Switzerland guidebook!

Got it! Yes I'm new to this. I have the Fodors guidebook to Switzerland. Still need to narrow this down. We will be in Switzerland for 5 days then headed to France the first and second week of September. Flying into Zurich. We are active and love to hike, bike while experiencing the sights and culture. Not into museums. There will be 4 of us traveling. Thanks!

Head to the Berner Oberland. We have been twice and it is phenomenal. There is dozens of great hiking trails, waterfalls and vistas. You can take trains to the top of the Jungfrau. We stayed in Lauterbrunnen and it worked out great for us. Check it out.

With only five days choose one base only. I echo michele_d's recommendation of the Bernese Oberland. Highly recommend Wengen, a quintessential Swiss village, car free, in the alps, easy access to unbelievable hiking and excursions yet a village with 23 restaurants and lots of other amenities. Just a 15 minute train ride up above Lauterbrunnen, so the views are of the peaks and not the cliffs overhanging the valley.
I have put together a 40+ page guide to the region based on my 16 visits (in 17 years) there. If you would like a copy send me a private message with your email address. Oh, just remembered this is Fodor's forum and I don't know that there is a private message feature? If not, go over to Trip Advisor and find me there with screen name KimSanJose. Many posts there on Wengen and the Bernese Oberland as well.
