Suggestions for 4 Nights in Amalfi

I have four free nights at Amalfi's Santa Catarina hotel so that is set. I'm just wondering how we should break up our time there. I haven't done any research as far as travel times to not sure what is realistic for day trips. Sounds like Capri is up my alley although everyone seems to agree you need to be there after all the crowds disappear to really appreciate it. How late do the boats run? Also sounds like Ravello is beautifully romantic... is that a quick trip from Amalfi? Does Positano have anything worthy to see for a day trip? Would that be better than Sorrento? We are most interested in gorgeous views, casual walks, quaint cafes, talking to locals. We'll be there end of Sept/beginning of Oct.

IB - the last hydrofoil back from Capri is usually about 5p.m. in Sept/Oct.

Times change during the season, but you can find timetables on:
http://www.capri.net/salsa/lang/en/page/transport.html

Ravello is less than 30 mins by bus from Amalfi. Buses run roughly hourly.
Get tickets before boarding, and validate them on the bus.

Positano beats Sorrento for setting/ views - but you could do both as a day-trip, either by bus or by ferry.

If you're into walking, don't miss the 'Path of the Gods' for gorgeous views.

Other options?
Pompei, Ercolano, Vesuvius, Paestum, Naples, Ischia, Montepertuso/Nocelle, Solfatara, Caserta, Cassino ...

Hope this helps ...

Steve

Hi IB,

Ravello is a short bus ride from Amalfi.

Positano is worth about a day. we preferred it to Sorrento.

Capri is better at night. The last ferry off the island is about 6-7 PM.

Paestum is a nice daytrip from Amalfi.

See the Naples/AC portion of my trip report for more details.

When people say Capri is "better" at night, I think it's because they spend most/all of their time in the towns of Capri and Anacapri. That's where the crowds are, shopping or people-watching. Some of the shops will be the same labels you'll see in Positano.

If you move around to other parts of the island, you probably won't encounter tourist crowds in late Sept./early Oct. There is a bus service that covers a bit more than half of the island. There is a scooter rental shop near the ferry landing below Capri town.

The other options you mentioned were Ravello, Positano and Sorrento. Ravello is definitely worth visiting. Positano is very nice. (Some on this board swoon over Positano, others prefer Amalfi.) Sorrento is the largest town (more a city, actually) and, with only four days in the area, not a priority IMO other than for beautiful views of the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius.

The only way to see Capri after all the tourists have left - ie evening/night - is to spend the night there - since the last boat leaves about 6pm I believe.

Unless, of course, you want to hire your own boat to take you back and forth.
