Studio near Rue St. Maur in the Marais: is the area safe for 3 women alone?
I am renting and apartment for my daughter, her friend, and myself there in January. Do you think we could walk from the metro stop alone at night? Or shoud we take a taxi instead?

I visited the 11th to see a friend and felt completely safe

Firstly, there are three of you, so you aren't really alone. Safety in numbers, my father always said.
Secondly, if you go to lespagesjaunes.fr, you are able type in your hotel address and the nearest metro location and it will tell you how great/little distance it is. You can also have it show pictures of the street you would be staying in if it will assuage your concerns.
Lastly, cost of a taxi split 3 ways is affordable and well worth the night sightseeing experience IMO as long as you pick up your taxi at a taxi stand rather than having them come to your restuarant/nightclub. We loved passing by famous sites all lit up etc. on the way to the hotel, and lets you enjoy some French wine w/dinner without having to worry about staying "sharp" for potential problems. Just relaxful for us.

klondike, her daughter and friend maybe too young to share expenses.
You brought up a good point that I didn't know til I was in Paris.
Once calling a cab from my hotel, a second time from a taxi stand to the same destination. Unlike here in the USA, the cab starts to charge the cost from where he left. Here in Bioston, it starts at my door.

Thanks for the tips. And yes, cigalechanta, you are right, it is on the 11th, not the Marais (though it is listed as such). You are also right about the costs, I will be footing them myself, so I would rather not take taxis, if I can help it.
Klondike, I agree, we won't be alone -there will be three of us...I will definetly try the lespagesjaunes site.
Thanks again!

It's a long street, running downhill (or uphill!), but the few times I've walked a bit of it, it seemed OK.

Travelnut,
You are right! I finally opted for the apartment near Denfert Rochereau. And Fishee, I will certainly put a report here about the apartment. So far, it seems to be a good deal: 1 bedroom, with everything, including wireless internet access, for 450 euros/week for 3 people.
The owner is a lawyer working with the French Embassy in Washington, D.C., at the moment, so she put up her own apartment for rent.
I will post a report here letting everybody know what it looks like "live".
And thank everybody who responded to this post.

I found it through craigslist:
http://www.craigslist.org
But the apartment can be seen in this site:

(I don't know how to use the tiny url...)
