Storing bags in Lisbon area

We are planning on a 2-week trip to several destinations in Portugal, with a 5-day visit to Madeira in the middle. Is there somewhere in Lisbon (either at the airport or at another central location) we can safely store the luggage we will not be taking to the island? The airline charges per bag, and also allows less weight on the domestic leg than on our flight from the US. We're checking out of our hotel, and checking into a new one when we return, so leaving them there is not an option.

Have you tried asking your hotel? Perhaps explain that you are going to Madeira and then heading home (so you dont have to mention the other hotel) and offer to pay them to store the bags for you? Or ask the new one to store them?

They will probably store it at the station. I once arrived in Lisbon a few days before the Euro Cup, and NOWHERE would store luggage because of security concerns. I think there was somewhere in of the malls that stored luggage under normal circumstances. You should check the station website.

The hotel (old or new) is your best bet - especially if it is free to guests. But you can store bags at the airport.

The main rail stations (Oriente, Santa Apolonia) have lockers.
