Interesting - I mean ever since like 20 years now there has been essential track work on RER C between Austerlitz and Orsay, where the line, a mainline from Orleans - the Orsay I believe once being called the Gare d'Orleans, ended - subsequently line extended via Eiffel area to join another commuter previous deadend rail line - why can't there simply pull it all up on that short stretch and get it right? RER trains always seem to crawl on that portion - not rapid transit.

I'm going to piggy back on this, because the experts are here.
We are taking the RER B to the St Michel stop, and then plan on getting in a taxi.
Any suggestions on how to leave the station to get to a taxi?

If you come up at Place Saint Michel in front of the café called Le Départ, there is a taxi stand.
The reason the work is taking so long is that they are completely rebuilding the tunnels, which requires huge injections of reinforcement stuff into the ground due to the fact they they are working only one meter from the Seine.
