Hello Everyone!

I am having trouble with organising an itinerary for 15 days in Rome/Southern Italy.
Me and my partner will be travelling together (he has never been to Italy, I have only seen the north)

Obviously we need at least 3-4 days to see Rome, then we would really like to see Naples, the Amalfi Coast (with a visit to Pompeii) and I would really like to see Sicily too- is this unrealistic to do in 15 days? We fly in and out of Rome.

We would like a blend of sites/museums, great food, and the odd day at a beautiful beach.

Any suggestions on how much time to allow for destinations and the various travel options would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi,
We are travelling to Tropea, Calabria for 6 nights in September and will do a day trip to Sicily. Then we are spending an additional 6 nights in Sorrento. Here we will do day trips to Naple. Pompeii, Capri and along the Almalfi Coast. We will fly into Calabria and out of Naples.

We traveled to Rome, Venice and Florence three years ago. Rome was my favorite! Rome we stayed at Hotel Adrinao near the Pantheon and loved this location. Good Luck!

If Sicily is a priority, consider flying to Palermo or Catania upon arrival in Rome at the beginning of your trip. Then work your way back, ending with a few days in Rome before you fly home.

There are night trains from both Palermo and Catania to Salerno and/or Naples, if that option appeals to you, or long train rides during the day. (There are also flights to Naples.) From Salerno you can bus or ferry to towns on the Amalfi Coast and onward to Sorrento, Pompeii and eventually Naples. Or start in Naples and go in the other direction. You can train to Rome from either Naples or Salerno.

You don't say what time of year you're going, but suggestions/recommendations might vary depending on the month.

Thank you for your responses, Jean, we will be there from mid August.

We arrive in Rome after quite a long trip via train down from Amsterdam (I don't...well I don't like flying) So I would prefer to spend our time in Rome at the start of the 15 days.

Joy, is Tropea relatively easy to get to? How are you getting from Tropea to Sorrento? Sorrento sounds like a definite for one of the bases (to visit Amalfi, Pompeii and Naples.

Jean, would you recommend a particular base in Sicily that has easy access to other sites/ a decent beach VERY near by?

klabarba, I think if you're not keen on flying at least to or from Sicily, you'd do better to save it for another trip when you have more time.

Rather than travelling as far south as Tropea (using most of a day getting there and another to go back north), consider going to either Ischia or Capri for a few days.

But, unless you have a generous budget, you're late looking for lodging in most beach destinations in mid-August. You might investigate that a bit before deciding where you want to go.

We will travel by train from Tropea to Naples (we have not figured this route out but I am not concerned) and from Naples I will hire a drive to Sorrento.

The train journey from Naples to Tropea takes 4 or more hours, depending on which train combo you choose. I don't see any early departures, and the earliest arrival in Tropea would probably be 2:37p. There are a couple of early Tropea-Naples departures.

Personally, I think 15 days is the minimum for Sicily itself. And I think 15 days would be perfect for Rome, Naples,and the Amalfi Coast. But it really depends on what you want to see and experience.
