South of France - Provence & Cote D'Azur

I know there are a lot of similar posts to mine, but I cannot find exactly what I'm looking for.

We are going to Provence for one whole week 18th-24th September 2017 and have planned the following itinerary so far (amended thousands of times!):

17th - Arrive at Marseille airport (during the night) (stay at Marseille)
18th - Marseille and Cassis (will book a tour so no need for car) (stay at Marseille)
19th - San Remy (go to Avignon for the day) (stay at St. Remy)
20th - San Remy (Wednesday market and L'Isle Sur La Sorgue) (stay at St. Remy)
21st - San Remy (Luberon villages) (stay at St. Remy)
22nd - Nice (stay in Nice)
23rd - Nice (stay in Nice)
24th - Nice (flight back at Marseille airport in the evening)

I really need to find a wine tour which starts from San Remy. The only well organised ones I found leave from Avignon. Can you suggest any options or any amendments to the itinerary?

Thanks!

You wouldn't need a car to get to Cassis, anyway, you can get there quickly by train from Marseille. I did.

FYI It is Saint Remy not SAN Remy (I think that's Italian).

It seems you have hardly any time in Marseille but maybe it's just a good starting point for your trip, nothing wrong with that. YOu can see a few things around the port.

Not sure I'd bother going to l'Isle sur la Sorgue, why are you going there? Better yet, how? You know St Remy doesn't have a train station. I suppose there are some bus lines somewhere, but I just don't see why you are even doing that. After all, you don't really have any time in St Remy, it's just a place to stay, you could spend the free day there (seeing Van Gogh asylum, etc). And on top of that, you even want a wine tour from St Remy, so when would you even do that? I guess that could replace l'Isle sur la Sorgue.

The problem with the wine tour is that people generally stay in St Remy when they have a car because it doesn't have a train station. If they don't have a car, they do stay in cities like Avignon or Aix, so they have more organized tour options.

I did find this one. Now they do leave from Avignon area but say they have a surcharge if you are more than 10 km from Avignon (St Remy is about 20-25 km), but the surcharge isn't that much, I think only about 20 euro per person.

Nice is in Provence by the way!

You have a sweet plan - if staying in St-Remy be sure to visit nearby Les Baux-de-Provence- the 'dead city'perhced high on a plateau -awesome views and lovely ruins.

And visit the asylum where Van Gogh committed himself after slicing his ear off in Arles - copies of his paintings done here are posted right where he executed them - in bucolic settings around the asylum.

Dear all, Many thanks for your replies! I apologies for the lack of details but posted while I was at work. We will be hiring a car for Saint Remy. Was thinking of hiring it as we leave from Marseille to Saint Remy as in Marseille we do not need a car.

Basically I thought of staying at Saint Remy because the lodging is no nice... those rental homes instead of hotels in the cities such as Avignon. Also, parking is available unlike what I read about Avignon. However, would welcome suggestions.

We would like to have hotel/home changes as little as possible and have a relaxed holiday whilst seeing as much as we can of the areas.

17th - Arrive at Marseille airport (during the night) (stay at Marseille)

18th - Marseille and Cassis (tour of Marseille and Cassis to be booked - https://www.getyourguide.com/marseil...seille-t31298/) (stay at Marseille)

19th - Saint Remy (go to Avignon for the day) (stay at Saint Remy)

20th - Saint Remy (Wednesday market) (stay at Saint Remy)

21st - Saint Remy (Luberon, Roussillon, Gordes) (stay at Saint Remy)

22nd - Nice (stay in Nice)

23rd - Nice (stay in Nice)

24th - Nice (flight back at Marseille airport in the evening)

To be honest, I absolutely wanted to go to this wine tour: https://www.viator.com/tours/Avignon...-3555OLIVEWINE. It is highly recommended but leaves from Avignon.

Also, is it worth spending 3 days in Nice? Will it be nice going to St Tropez or Cunnes for a day? Or will there be an issue with traffic?

Thanks a lot!

Nice is nice. It has a lazy sensual vibe, with the Italian influence and all the curvy Belle Epoque architecture. And Nice is a good base for public transportation along the coast, east to Monaco, Cap Ferrat and the Villa Ephrussi-Rothschild, Eze, west to Cannes and Antibes.

Ordinarily I'd say drop the car when you come into Nice. But you could use the car to go into St. Tropez; it has no train station.

I would rather see Antibes, Beulieu sur Mer, Cap St Jean Ferrat, Villefranche than Cannes or St Tropez.

Watch your bags. Lots of pickpockets on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice.

I love walking around Nice on a beautiful sunny day.

Oh, yes, Villa Beatrice Rothschild is stunning!

The most beautiful garden imaginable with a singing fountain that plays the Flower Duet from Lakmé.

Thank you for your comments. I will absolutely include Nice then.

What further suggestions do you have please?

I really wanted to include a wine tour but am not seeing anything easy to book if we want to stay at Saint Remy... any suggestions or alterations to hotel bases?

Thank you!
