After much research I have decided to look for an apartment in the South Kensington area in London. Do you agree this is a suitable area with much to do for my daughters (5-12)? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Yes - Science Museum, V&A and Natural History Museum in walking distance, Hyde Park & Kensington Gardens just up the road, most other things you'd likely to want to see are one Tube ride.

Just a tip if coming from Heathrow - instead of taking the direct Tube instead get off at Hammersmith walk a few feet to the adjacent platform and take a District Line Tube to South Kensington as that will save a lot of steps at South Kensington.

It's a great area to stay with your daughters - within easy striking distance of the museums, Hyde Park and also the shopping areas in Knightsbridge, Kings Rd and High Street Ken.

Take your daughters to get frozen yoghurt at Snog (Princess Kate's fave!) and crepes at Kensington Creperie and cookies from Ben's cookies. All of these are right around the tube station in South Ken

Alan - are the escalators no longer functioning at South Ken? I'm failing to see how changing at Hammersmith would make any difference? The OP can just take the Picaddilly line directly from LHR to SOuth Ken and not have to change.

I don't recall there being escaltors at South Ken. Just a short flight of steps to the ticket level and then another to the street. I will say I have given up the tube for the buses but remember using SK in March and a lot over the annual trips to London for the last 40 or so years!

I love the area . It is well served by both tube and buses and there is much to do in walking distance as noted above. Lots of shops and cafes on every street.There is a Citadines on Glocester Road and a base2stay on Harrington Rd..I think it's Harrington Rd.

There are escalators that take you from the Picadilly platform up to the District line level. You'll have a small set of stairs to negotiate if you take the Picadilly or the District line to get to Street level, which is why I'm questioning the transfer at Hammersmith.

I have looked into the citadines but not really what i was looking for - i will look into base2stay

does anyone know if there are any family hostels in this area

Definitely South Kensington!

South Kensington is a residential area. Westminster is mostly offices and hotels.

You don't mention your budget for lodging but Paris Vacation Apartments, whom we've rented from several times, now has 2 London apartments in South Kensington. We've rented one for a week next May. The agency has been a pleasure to work with. www.parisvacationapartments.com

South Kensington is a much better area for a tourist than Westminster. You will however be hard pressed to find anything for the high season for anywhere close to your budget.
