Sorrento to Rome Bus vs Train
Has anyone travelled from Sorrento to Rome by the Marozzi bus line? How does this compare to taking the train from Napoli central station?
Any preferences/pros/cons?
I am trying to leave Sorrento on Monday 9/16 around 9-10am.
My options are:
Marozzi bus- from what I understand may take 4 hrs? Cost TBD
Car Transfer to Naples then Naples to Rome 2.5 hrs total Cost 140 Euros for 2
Considering the travel time differences are significant and we only have 2.5 days in Rome, I am willing to pay extra with option B, however the bus is cheaper, direct and therefore may not be such a bad idea.
Appreciate any insight!

If you looked further into the Marozzi route at http://www.marozzivt.it, you will find that the bus leaves Sorrento at 6am and 5pm. Is the bus still an option to you?

4 hours inside a bus on an ugly motorway? Yuk!
Just pre-book a Naples Centrale to Rome Termini 186 mph high-speed train from €19 at www.trenitalia.com, 1 hour 10 minutes. Zero check-in.
Then hop on the little Circumvesuviana Railway from Sorrento to Naples, every 30 minutes, journey time 55-65 minutes, fare €4.10, buy a ticket at the station.
In Naples, the Circumvesuviana station is underneath Napoli Centrale mainline station.

I've done both bus and train and much prefer the train. Why spend money on a car service when you could take the Circumvesuviana from Sorrento to Naples, take the escalator upstairs and then the train to Rome. So easy.

It's scruffy but I didn't feel unsafe. I took it several times to get around while I was in Sorrento and yes, it can be crowded at commute times, but not otherwise. And you'll be getting on at the end of the line in Sorrento so will have a choice of seats at any time of day.

It depends on the time of day as to how crowded it is. During peak times, when students and workers are commuting, then the cars will be crowded.
Have you ever been on the bus between Sorrento and Rome? It's packed and you have less personal space than the train and no where to stretch your legs. If you're concerned about crowding then definitely do not take the bus.

The Circumvesuviana has some new trains, but no predicting which you will get at any given time.

I've been on it with only 6 people or so. The bus does make a stop on the way (Autogrill). The advantage is storing your luggage underneath, not having to transfer and 20€ price. Disadvantage is longer travel time and very early departure.

kybourbon - you were lucky with only 6 people on the bus. I'd rather drag my luggage around and have room to extend my legs and not have the metal foot rests digging into my ankles every time I moved a millimeter.

People with mobility concerns may find that the Marozzi bus is less stressful than taking the two trains (with a connection at Napoli Centrale station) with heavy luggage: you place the luggage in the underfloor compartment of the bus and forget about it until arrival in Rome. By contrast, you need to LIFT your luggage on board both trains, then carry it BETWEEN the trains at Napoli Centrale.
People who are not physically challenged may prefer the faster and much more frequent train solution between Sorrento and Rome.
People on a tight budget (who are unable to get a deep discount on the Trenitalia train by booking in advance) may value the cheap (18 Euros) bus fare, which is available without any advance purchase whatsoever.
People who must use the restroom very frequently will avoid the bus altogether, and take the train.

The buses usually have a bathroom, but they prefer it's used for emergencies only. They also stop halfway at Autogrill for a break.
I usually take the train, but you can encounter flights of stairs in the Naples train station.
