Sorrento or Amalfi

We are going to the Amalfi Coast in late March. I am debating whether to stay in Amalfi at the Santa Caterina or in Sorrento
at the Grand Hotel Aminta and appreciate opinions. Also, is it better to stick to one hotel for the 6 days or split the time between Capri and one of the above options?

Hi Saundra,
I can't help with your first question, but I should think that it would be more relaxing to stay on the mainland and visit Capri for a day.

Ciao, Saundra. I think it very much depends on what you want to do while there. Stay in Amalfi if you want to visit Ravello (a bit early for the gardens, but it's still beautiful) and Paestum.
If you're thinking of Naples' museums, Pompei/Ercolano then Sorrento is the much easier and less daily travelling choice.
I enjoy Sorrento in the off season. It's way touristy, but there are far less folk in March, and I like the restaurants and the people I've met. I love staying at the Albergo Lorelei e Londres-balconies facing the Bay of Naples, nice restaurant downstairs, and an ancient elevator to beach side if you want to stroll in the damp. There's also an excellent 17/18th century Museum the Correale, which has astounding collections of porcelain and marquetry.
Check out:
http://www.sorrento-online.com/english/default.htm
or
http://www.sorrentoweb.com/introuk/index.htm
both of these sites also have an Amalfi component.
Amalfi is similar, older and quite wonderful. A bus zips you up to the gardens in Ravello (to me much more harrowing than the trip around the peninsula!) which are beautiful no matter what the season. The town has an amazing aspect and is quite lovely.

In terms of splitting the time, I agree with Ira, maybe 3-4 days in Sorrento, one of which is a day trip to Anacapri or Capri. Then the remainder in Amalfi.

Saudra, I've stayed at the Aminta twice and love the place (and the staff). However, I think the Santa Caterina is a much more luxurious property. If you want romance and togetherness and privacy with great views, stay at the Santa Caterina. If you want activity and to use the place as a base for day trips to Pompeii, Capri, Amalfi coast, etc. I'd stay at the Aminta. Incidently, the views there are incredible. I loved having lunch on the deck near the pool looking out over the bay of Napoli. Incredible!

Good orning, Saundra my opinion woykd
be to stay at a hotel on the cliffs in
Sorrento that overlook the Bay of Naples. e.g. Syrene. Bay side rooms overlook the Bay, a wonderful sight at
day and night. From Sorrento you can
take day trips either by car or bus to
any place along the Amalfi,, By rail you can go from Sorrento to Naples or
Pompeii. By boat from the Marina you
can go to Capri for the day or possibly
might make arrangements with your hotel
to hold you luggage so that you could make it an overnighter on Capri.,
Richard of LaGrange Park, Ill.
