amalfi or sorrento (May 20-23)
Hi All,
I am going with my husband to Italy in May. We are both in our early 30ths and will be there for his birthday and our 2 year anniversary. I thought I had my itinerary figures out with the help of some reviewers here: Florence (2), Sorrento (3), Capri (2), Rome (4) but now my husbands friend is recommending in staying in Amalfi vs Sorrento. Not sure what to do. We will not have a car and will rely on public transportation and will need to take a boat to Capri. Also we are hoping to stay in a town which has a night life.
Please help!

I like your plan as it is progressing.
Sure, Amalfi is a nice town. But Sorrento is perfect as base for not only Pompeii but for your trip to Capri. Amalfi busses, IMO, suck. Motion sickness is an issue on those busses.
So Sorrento for both Pompeii and to visit Ischia or Capri with easy. And you like night life (unless I'm confusing you with another poster, but I don't think so). Pick Sorrento for night life over Amalfi.

Hi eb,
I think that you have a very good plan now.
For what you want to do, I suggest that Sorrento would be a better base.
I have not been to Capri (Vertigo problems). However many posters, on this board and others, have reported that Capri is much better in the evenings, after the daytrippers have gone.
If you decide to substitute the Greek ruins at Paestum for Pompeii, and give up your time in Naples, I think that Amalfi would be better.
Amalfi/Capri ferry schedules can be found at

I'm basing this solely on convenience of transportation.

Does your husband do the packing?
