Sofitel Athens vs. Holiday Inn Athens Atica
I have an 11:35 a.m. international flight in a couple months from ATH to PHL and am wondering if it is worth it to spend the extra $50 to stay at Sofitel Athens instead of the Holiday Inn Athens Atica?
This may seem miniscule, but for this frugal traveler, every dollar counts! Thanks for the help!

If budget is a concern, think about http://www.perishotelapt.gr which also has a shuttle.
Between Holiday Inn and Sofitel I would take the latter, which is only a few minutes walk from the airline check in desks. Rooms are luxurious, and the hotel has a rooftop pool. When I stay there I walk across to the terminal to use the free wifi rather than pay exorbitant hotel fees. You also have a choice of terminal restaurants in addition to those in the hotel.

We normally stay in central Athens and enjoy a nice stroll around before we hop the Metro out to the airport for our noon flight. That gives us the opportunity to spend our last night dining in Athens. We will be doing exactly that this June.
Having said that, the last time we flew out it was at 6am We opted to stay at Sofital. Holiday Inn and Peris require a shuttle but Sofital gives us the luxury of an extra hour of sleep and then a minute walk into the terminal.
Given your flight is not early and money matters why not stay at an inexpensive Central Athens hotel the night before.

Good advice from stanbr and WWK, especially if you are already in Athens or coming off a ferry at Piraeus. You will need to be at the airport for an international flight 2 hrs before departure, and I would allow at least an hour to get there from central Athens unless you are taking a taxi. As I recall, the airport metro takes about 45 minutes from Syntagma Square or Monastiraki, and you may have to wait up to 20 minutes for a train that goes all the way to the airport.
If you are coming off an internal flight or a ferry at Rafina, return tickets on the metro from/to the airport will cost €18, or taxi fare about €35 each way, so factor that into the cost of staying in central Athens. The express bus between Syntagma Square and the airport costs €6 each way.
