Siena Report

Had high expectations for this city but very disappointing. Went and walked but very little to see here. The rain was steady and hard there all day long. Visited a couple of large churches there but the town seemed not to be a town at all but a ghost town. Not the pictures I had seen with dozens of tourists. For some strange reason there were a few English speaking College students roaming around like they lived there or something. Restaurants were all closed until 7:30 PM!!! so there was nowhere to eat either. We had the main square to ourselves and stood there in the rain watching the early darkness begin to fall at 5 o'clock. We stumbled our way back to the main station and jumped on a "Directo" bus back to Florence. (Some say it's quicker than the train) Well that Direct bus was not direct at all and probably intended to fool the unsuspecting tourists. The full bus must have cycled through the passengers 3 or 4 times, stopped in every small town and took 2 hours to get back. The passengers on the bus all appeared to be locals commuting back home but what would someone be doing working in Sienna? It is a ghost town. Chose this city over Pisa and made a bid mistake. This depressing city brought down my mood for the entire rest of my trip from this point on.

Bill - I think a good part of the problem with your not enjoying Siena is the fact that it was raining. Many people, no matter what town/city they live in, do not come out in the rain. You therefore don't get a flavor for the daily goings and comings of the people and for the vibrancy of the place. We went there this fall, and enjoyed walking around the city, as well as sitting and having coffee at an outdoor cafe on the palazzo (sp?)and just people watched. At home I don't budge from my house if it is raining, and I bet lots of the residents & other tourists of/to Siena feel the same way. I would, like you, however, leave the hotel room (even if it were raining) to explore a new place if I were a tourist. In all liklihood my time in that town/city would be limited. One therefore has to make the best of the time there.

This poster must have only been out of the US one time. He expects all the cities to be up and running for him to see...sort of like when his parents took him to Disneyland...or when he plays his video games. Get a life is correct. These are real towns with real people and that is why you go there. They are not fake like the theme parks or Vegas. Siena is a great city and fun to visit....even in the rain. Bill was probably disappointed because the churches did not have a fast food place next door or a made up Jesus walking around talking to people.

Bill, Now you see why the airline ticket was so cheap. Try it in May or Sep for a different experience.

I think black cloud has a good point. Sorry if my post sounds a little critical but I was REALLY trying to relate my feelings when I was in Sienna. But maybe my remarks sound like when people complain about the cell phones in Venice and how the city should ban them because they destroy the atmosphere of Venice. Would Ankron, Ohio ban soccer moms from using their cellphones because I could not enjoy my vacation in Ohio?
My main point is a got nothing out of Sienna and could could not relate to all the boasting about it and I cannot understand where all these commuters are working. In the castle.
p.s. Jesus did appear as a light streak in one of the pictures I took of the main Duomo but I did not hear him talk to me. I did see the many McDonald's arrows throughout Sienna but I did not feel the urge to follow them since I can do that in Disneyland next week.
