Hello SaraLee,
My wife and I travelled the Agrigento-Caltagirone route by train, in reverse. Either direction, you will have to make two changes--in Caltanissetta and Gela--and the fastest trip is over four hours. You do get to wind through some beautiful countryside, perhaps on a almost empty train.
We were lucky--a month in Sicily and the longest train delay was five minutes.
And topping for anyone who can add any info on this route by bus.

Hi Sara - You'd have to change by bus too, I believe.
For services around Caltagirone try:

Hope this helps ...

Thank you for the help. I am in 60s traveling alone, and arriving around 5pm in a new town would be too late for me.
I almost decided to go to Catania and take a day trip or join a tour to Pz Armerina and Caltagrirone in later days.
tnx

JFYI for people who might plan a similar trip as mine, this was how I visited Valle dei Templi, the Mosaici, and the Steps in Caltagirone in 2 days:
Day 1
07:35 Train from Palermo to Agrigent (left the bag in a locker in station)
10:00 A city bus to the Valley of Temples(every 15 min, 10 min ride), and back
12:20 Train from Agrigent to Enna FS(2hr) where I found no sign of anything.
A kind man asked his friend to give me a ride to Enna Bassa bus terminal on his way home in Enna. I should have taken a bus from Agrigent.
15:05 AST bus from Enna Bassa to Piazza Armerina (30 min).
Day 2
09:10 Taxi from the taxi stand by the town market (10 min, 10e RT).
(City buses run in high season only)
11:00 The taxi picked me up and dropped me at Duomo on my request.
13:00 AST bus to Caltagrone (1 hr).
14:30 Taxi to a B&B near the steps (10e).
From Palermo, I made two afternoon trips: to Monreale by bus, to Cefalu by train. From Catania, I made two day trips: to Siracusa and Taormina by
Interbus buses. There were choices of means to make these trips easily.
