Should I spend a night or two in Avila as well as Segovia?

I plan to spend at least 2 nights in Segovia and would like to have opinions about Avila. Photos of the walls are spectacular and make me want to visit there. Some people say that there is not that much to see otherwise. Would it be practical to take a day trip from Segovia to Avila? I am planning 2 nights in Salamanca, also, so I will probably be traveling through Avila. Thanks!

I would say yes, but it depends on your full travel plans.I can see, from your posting history that you are also heading south...so more details about travel arrangements are needed for a full answer...thank you.

On a two week trip that also included Salamanca, Madrid and Toledo, I spent three nights/days in Segovia and absolutely loved it. It's one of my favorite places anywhere. I did a day trip from Segovia to Avila (by bus). It was pleasant and easy and I'm glad I saw the walls. I walked around the entire perimeter of the town/walls, then around the center a bit. So I think a day trip is a good idea. But it is nowhere as interesting as Segovia so I would not take more time than a half/three quarters day trip away from Segovia.

Here are my trip report and photo links:

I spent just over a day in Segovia, which felt about right for e, just under a day in Avila, which also felt about right for me, and 2 full and very busy days in Salamanca, which felt just a tad rushed. I loved all three!

I went to Avila as a day trip from Madrid and enjoyed it, not sure an overnight is necessary.

We, too, stopped in Avila on the way to Salamanca. You can leave your bag in a locker at the bus station. Just don't forget to retrieve it; I almost did that!

Add my voice to the chorus of worth a visit but not am overnight stay. HOWEVER, if you do stay overnight in Avila try and a secure a room at the parador, it is charming.

Personally, I would spend more time in Salamanca. It is an incredible city, so much to see and do. I also love Segovia, but in my opinion, Salamanca is worth at least a day or two more than you are planning. Also, while you are in Segovia, be sure to visit La Granja, the summer palace, about a half hour from Segovia.

Avila is a great stop on the way to/from Salamanca from Segovia, but I don't think it rates an overnight stay.

The churches are worth visiting, although the art is sometimes quite gruesome.

On our first trip to Spain we drove to the parador in Avila directly from the Madrid airport. It was a magical introduction to Spain. We left the next day but it a special memory for me. I loved Segovia and spent more time there.
