Security at Major Sights & Film
It is my understanding that some of the major attractions / museums in Italy require you to pass through security upon entering. Is it similar to airline screening where you have to put your belongings on a conveyer belt and subject them to x-ray scans, or do the security checkpoints consist solely of a metal detector that you need to walk through?
I am asking because I am concerned about having to repeatedly subject my high-speed film (ISO 800 or 1000) to scans that may ruin my pictures. I will eventually convert to the digital age, but not before my trip.

Hi Marcus,
I remembered a good thread on this topic - you can find it here:

I was worried about the risk too but there wasn't much I could do to avoid repeated x-rays on my last trip. In three months my film went through countless security checks - some at sites, at luggage storage and of course on all of my flights (11 in total). I kept my film in a lead bag and nobody ever took the film out - but then someone mentioned that they turn up the x-ray to see into the lead bag....so who knows. I used 800 film and didn't have any fogging in my pictures. I agree with you though - my next trip I will be entering the digital age - if only so I don't have to carry all of that film around
Cheers,
Murphy

You'll encounter many security pass throughs and x-rays in Italy. Most of the time I simply hand my camera and extra rolls of film to the guard and ask that they not be put through the x-ray scan. Possibly because I look exactly like the middle-aged American tourist I am, I've never had a problem getting an eyeball inspection as opposed to a x-ray screening.
