Scotland village and/or B and B
I am looking for a village and/or B and B located a 1 to 2 hour drive north or northwest from Edinburgh where we might spend our first night. We like to hike, fish, explore ruins. A walkable village or a b and b near a pub would be great. We'd like something in a moderate price range, but will pay more for a special place.

I remember reading good reviews about this B&B and bookmarked it for future reference.

Callendar is a nice village. We stayed at self catering at the Leny Lodge. They used to have a b&b, but I think it is all self catering now. Good pub across the street from it. There are several b&b's in town

Culross is a National Trust for Scotland village on the north shore of the Firth of Forth. It has been restored as it was in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Crieff is a place where Lowlanders get away for a weekend.
If you decide not to drive far on your first day, you could do a lot worse than Linlithgow, 17 miles west of Edinburgh.

Your choices are almost limitless - several good suggestions already.
However, before we can give any specific/useful recommendations we need to know what you mean by >>moderate price range, but will pay more for a special place.<<
'Moderate' means different things to different people.

Oh - come on!! Give us a hint. We've had folks ask for 'moderate' recommendations before and come to find out they were totally unrealistic or totally over the top generous. How much do you want to spend?

I just emailed them to see if I can get a reservation.

Saraho: See my post on your other thread. It might be a better use of your short time to not stay in Culross. You can see the whole village in a couple of hours (and that is very generous).
Though it is a lovely place and you might want to stay there anyway.

Last month I stayed in Perth at the Pitcullen Guest House. About an hour north of Edinburgh, which puts you so close to everything you want to do.
It was so nice I ended up staying for a week! The room/bed/bath were very comfortable. The owner/innkeeper Peter has a great touch for details. The breakfast room is sunny and light, and very important for me, he has free wifi and a computer for guests to use in the sitting room.
He also has a wealth of information for dining, outings and sightseeing, I totally felt at home there. Rates about 60 per night.
