Scotland in November
Hello. Thinking of visiting Scotland (Edinburgh and Inverness area specifically) in November. This will be our first time in Scotland and wondering if given the limited daylight hours at that time of year we would be better off going during the spring or summer months instead. Not concerned about this so much regarding Edinburgh and plan for our time in Inverness so be more about relaxing in/near our hotel rather than extensive sightseeing. Just don't want to miss out on too much natural beauty due to shorter winter days. Thanks for your feedback.

Of course - if you have the option - May, June or July would be preferable. June is my very favorite month in Scotland. It mainly isn't the short days in November but the likelihood of bad weather. Though you can certainly have bad weather in June as well - having daylight til 11PM helps even when it is raining sideways
November is fine if that is the only time you can travel - but it does sound a if you have flexibility.

Well if you have the choice then obviously longer days give you more time to see things. What else can you really expect anyone to tell you?
Do you have a specific reason for going to Inverness? It is not in itself particularly attractive from a tourist's viewpoint.
What is the total time you have for your trip?

In Edinburgh, short days are not an issue. It's a city and well-lighted.
I agree with Dulcius re Inverness. It is not a particularly attractive city, and it is not in the most attractive area of Scotland. Unless you have a particular reason like ancestor hunting, I would rethink this.

Thanks for the helpful input janisj & ackislander. We were given a gift certificate to Inverlochy Castle hotel hence the request for feedback re: Inverness. Also have business in London in November so thought to tie both trips together. As I said, the daylight isn't a concern for Edinburgh. We'll likely go in Summer instead. Thanks again!

We were in West Lothian just outside of Edinburgh in November 2013. Weather was chilly, but not unpleasant. Stayed in Linlithgow where there are lovely B&B's and lots to see nearby: Linlithgow Palace, St Michael's Church (where Mary Queen of Scots was baptized), historic restaurants in Linlithgow. Nearby is Falkirk Wheel, Stirling Castle, Edinburgh Castle, Loch Lomond. We enjoyed a lovely bus trip on the Hairy Coo, going out of Edinburgh into the Highlands. There is train service out of Linlithgow to Edinbugh, but parking is very limited if you have a car. I would recommend taking trains from the Bathgate station, about 5-6 miles from Linlithgow, where there is more parking available.

If your gift certificate has an expiration then I would do it with your London business trip. I travel in all sorts of weather during the winter and find great things to see and do in all seasons. The shorter days this last trip just meant all the beautiful lights were on earlier. I just hope the tram is finished soon there.
