Scotland: Glamis & Dunnottar Castles

Hiya,

My husband and I will be visiting Scotland in June. It will be our first visit and we're very excited! I'm hoping someone can help me with a question on drive times.

We'll be driving from Edinburgh to Speyside, where we'll be staying for a few days. We'd like to stop and see a castle or two along the way. Glamis and Dunnottar are at the top of our list--is it total madness to think we could make short visits to both and end up in Abelour by supper time?

Many thanks in advance!

Unfortunately you can't really do a 'quick' visit to either castle. But if you left Edinburgh early and got to Glamis at opening time, you could fit Dunnottar in as well. I wouldn't count on being to aberlour by a specific time, but there are other places you could eat en route.

Meant to add - the entire drive will take about 5 hours.

Thanks so much, Janis! That's extremely helpful. We're trying to get to Abelour at a reasonable time to check in to our lodging, so perhaps if I can arrange a late enough check-in time, we could swing it.

If I could be so bold as to ask a follow up question... If we were to do just one, is there one you'd recommend over the other? (I know they're very different, so maybe it's apples and oranges, but thought I'd ask anyway.)

Thanks again.

If it has to be just one . . . Decide on the day. If the weather is vile, skip Dunnottar because the trek out and back from the car park is a slog down and up a very hilly path. If the weather is glorious - there is no better place.

Glamis is almost totally indoors.
