Salzburg or Innsbruck?

Salzburg or Innsbruck?
Will be traveling to Munich for 3 nights in July. Which side trip would be more enjoyable? Innsbruck bus tour or train travel on our own to Salzburg? Party of 3 (parents in 50's and son 24) Want mountain views and non big city. If we opt for Salzburg does eurorail pass for Germany cover travel to Salzburg?

I agree with Salzburg. Innsbruck is a fun small town to shop in, but Salzburg definately feels more authentic and less hustle. Mountain views are beautiful. I am not sure about the eurorail pass, we have always driven. Good luck!

Salzburg hands down. Beautiful city.
The train line to Salzburg from Munich is actually a German line, so your pass should work. If not, the three of you can ride there and back for a grand total of 22 Euro via a "Bayern Lander Ticket"--must use RB or RE trains, and go 2nd class, leave 9am or later and return prior to 3am the next day. Quite a deal, hey?

Another vote for Salzburg...which is "just" over the border from Germany and I suspect your pass will work..if not, the "conductor" on the train will tell you and either issue you an additional ticket for the few feet into Austria or you can go on one of those Bavaria tickets mentioned above but I wouldn;t spend the money unless I knew I had to.

You will enjoy it more if you go on a weekday and not at the weekend when it is jammed packed with German weekenders.
Sure, it's very pretty but the Mozart and Sound of Music aspects of it have been done to death and so over commercialised and expensive, one day trip was enough for me.

I just returned from a trip to Germany and Holland and our 2 country Eurail pass (Germany/Benelux) included travel to Salzburg in Austria and Basel in Switzerland since they are on the border. I would opt for Salzburg, it was beautiful and not crowded.

I found Salzburg TOO TOO overrun with tourists while I was there, and too full of kitsch. Granted, I went during the high summer season.
In contrast, my stay in Innsbruck was lovely and quaint, with plenty to see in a BEAUTIFUL town that absorbs the tourism without catering to the Disneyland Austria crowd.
I thought I'd throw my two cents in, just to let jocorum know that both locations certainly have their merits.

Salzburg is full of klitsch, or something like it. It is a tourist trap of a place, but still fun.
The train system to Salzburg is the Deutsche Bahn. When you buy a ticket to Munich, you buy from the big red DB window. That surprised me.
But Kufstein and Salzburg and perhaps other places near the border are included in the Bayern Ticket.
Rail ticket wise, they are German.
