rookies in paris - cost of taxi or shuttle from airport?

Our flight should arrive at 10am at CDG. We're a family of four. What is the most economical way to transfer from the airport to our apartment rental in the 5th? Are 4 permitted in a standard taxi? What cost should we expect? Any good tips on shuttles?

thanks for any advice! (I'm excited beyond words and have had so much fun reading all the sage advice of fodorites.)

It's your first time? make it easy on yourself and take a taxi...the additional expense is small and the stress you will save is great. Have the hotel arrange a shuttle for the return.

Taking a taxi (about 50€ plus luggage charges and tip) would be much the easiest. However, if you will have a lot of luggage, you might consider a shuttle. Most of them run around 18€ per person, but there can be discounts based on the number of people travelling.

Airport Shuttle is the outfit we've used in the past.

Have a wonderful time in France!

Thanks for the advice!
I didn't know we'd pay more for a taxi based on luggage. We plan to travel very light.
First trip to Europe for all except me. I backpacked all over Europe "in a previous life" a couple of decades ago. But, I've never been to the Paris airport.

The Parishuttle was so easy last summer. They were waiting for us when we called them to say we were in, and the price was under 35 euro for 2, I think. But based on what others say, a taxi for 4 might be just as economical.

thanks wren - just checked Parishuttle and the price is 18€ per person for 2-4 traveling together. So 72€ for the 4 of us. Cheaper to go for a taxi I guess?

Definitely a taxi would be less than that and 50 Euros would be on the high side of ballpark estimates.

The taxi from CDG to your apt. in the 5th should cost around 43 Euros..
I believe that you need a minivan for 4 people..and to be honest i dont know if you are allowed to sit in front with the taxi driver..

The train is definitely more economical, but not recommended unless you've been to Paris before.

How wonderful for you and your family! Have fun!!

Take a taxi. Go out to the taxi queue, tell the guy there you need a cab for 4 and you will get one in short order. There are now many taxis for 4. The "extra" for luggage is VERY modest--about 1E/bag. Be SURE not to take a taxi from anyone who might approach you inside the terminal--take only taxis marked Taxi Parisien. The others will overcharge you. It will be about 50E and worth every penny to start your vacation in a less stressful situation. When you return to CDG just tell your hotel to call a taxi for you that will accomodate 4 people. When it arrives it will have some fare on the meter because it starts from where it leaves its stand.

Merci to all for the replies!

Gretchen - thanks for the advice on avoiding a taxi and driver other than the "Taxi Parisien" from the official taxi queue. And we'll be sure to mention we need a taxi for 4!

Hi there, I just booked online with Paris Shuttle who I've used before and it is costing me $55 total for both arrival and departure pick up (one person).

Just returned & I agree - take a taxi! Shuttles involve waiting time & other passengers - why bother? On arrival, we used Airport Connection from CDG to Paris & it took inordinately long to get on the road. On departure, we took a taxi & it was a snap. Taxis are of comparable cost and, frankly, more convenient.

Since you are arriving in the middle of the day, when crowds should not be a problem, the train and metro would be a good option, but since each of you would have to have a ticket (I don't know if kids pay less), it would not have the cost advantage that it would for a couple.

You can plan your routes on the route finder at

http://www.ratp.fr/index_eng.htm

which is an invaluable resource for public transportation in Paris.

I haven't taken the shuttles, but from reading their ads I have the impression that they are oriented toward hotels, and I would wonder if they would deliver you to an apartment, or to a nearby hotel?

That leaves a taxi, which I think is your best option, as the driver would likely be able to find the apartment, and your costs would be reasonable because of your numbers.

just to answer cleaveland question, shuttles do drop off and pick up from apartments. I've done this before and am doing it again on Wed.
