Rome to Pisa day trip
Can a Rome to Pisa day trip be done? We will be in Rome for 4 days and Venice for 4 days. How long is the train ride?
Is Pisa easier to get to from Rome or Venice? Are there cheap flights to pisa from Rome or Venice? thanks for your advice

It would be about a 3 hour train trip from Rome (2 to Florence and one to Pisa). If you are only going to those two cities, you might want to consider a different day trip (Florence? Pompeii?). Unless you have a burning desire to see the leaning tower.

I would strongly concur that Florence would be a much more satisfying day trip (and spend two less hours traveling) than Pisa - - originating from Rome. And almost twice as true, originating from Venice.

If you are taking the train from
Rome to Venice anway then take a detour on the way through Pisa instead of a day trip. If you just want to get it out of your system and hour will be plenty of time unless you want to climb the tower.

a few years ago we did a daytrip to Pisa from Rome with our children.
took a early train , arrived in Pisa right before noon,
spent a few hours there and then returned to rome late in day.
All of us thought it was a great side trip.
Do not miss going to the top of the Bapistry!
The view from there is spectacular, esp looking at the Tower.

thanks for all your advice, you all have been a great help.
my only concern about going to Pisa on the way to Venice, is the baggage we'll be carrying. it's a lot to lug around. thats why i am thinking of Rome -pisa. Rome-pisa-venice would be ideal though. oh well

Hi spunge,
Go to www.trenitalia.com for schedules for trains Rome/Pisa. It costs about 52E 1cl/40E 2cl each way if you use the ES* to Florence.
If you do that, you can spend 1/2 day in Pisa and 1/2 day in Florence.
If your ardor for the leaning tower cools, you might want to consider a day in Orvieto or a daytrip to Pompeii or Ostia Antica.

There are left luggage offices at all main Italian stations, so it's easy to do Roma-Firenze then visit Pisa before returning to Firenze. There are also direct trains from Roma to Pisa. Check schedules on www.trenitalia.com or www.bahn.de.

Just a word of caution about the left luggage at Pisa. When we were there a family was waiting for the guy to come open it (during the posted open hours) and no one showed up. They ended up missing their train. Could have been an off day.

Always allow plenty of time when retrieving your luggage: the staff tend to be very busy when trains are arriving or departing. Therefore, get your luggage in good time, then go to have a coffee before joining your train.

Here's the website for Firenze S.M.N. station:
http://www.firenzesantamarianovella...._2&lang=en
Looks like the luggage check is on ground floor. €3 per piece for 12hrs.
Once you get to Pisa, you have to take a bus from the station to the Leaning Tower. The bus ride is about 10mins; or you can choose to walk, which takes about 25mins. If your schedule is tight but want to go up the Tower, you might want to reserve tickets in advance at:
http://www.opapisa.it/
Yes, and make sure you visit the Cathedral & Baptistry as well.
Have a good trip.

I posted Pisa daytrip directions and luggage storage info on Ira's "Helpful Information: Italy" thread, my post is dated 01/07/04.
I have read 2 other posts like Grasshopper's since last summer where the luggage office was closed either for the day or for a few hours. Probably more of the exception than the rule but heed his caution. Regards, Walter

You might want to contact the Pisa tourism office for the latest information on baggage storage. Their website lists e-mail contact and phone numbers. www.pisa.turismo.toscana.it
