Rome Lodging for family of 5
We are a family of five tacking on 5 days in Rome to a Athens and three continent cruise. Our children are 13,11 and 9 and good troopers have traveled fairly extensively. We need to rent an apartment in Rome or perhaps two hotel rooms-- but the double hotel room shot gets pretty expensive unless we could get a larger room at a decent rate. Any help on a safe, central location would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

Try www.sleepinitaly.com for great apartments available. Various people on here have had good experiences with this company.

I haven't stayed at these but they are considerations for our next trip. Both were recommended on Slow Travel.

Hi Dineroguru,
I stayed here last July with our family of 4:

If you have any specific questions I am happy to answer. It was in the Spanish Steps area. It was up a LOT of stairs with no lift -- bonus: music school RIGHT next to it playing beautiful music... it was amazing.. two full bathrooms which was great -- pretty sparse imo but it was not too expensive for a real two bedroom/two bath with a/c (not sure when you will be there)

We liked the Domus Julia, which is near the Barberini Palace and Spanish Steps. It's an apartment-type annex to the Hotel Julia. So you have the benefit of the Hotel's front desk, and breakfast in its pretty breakfast room.
We liked its location, on a very small side street, and we walked to most sites from there. You need public transit to go to the Coloseum and the Vatican, for the most part. We did walk all the way from those places back to the hotel, taking our time and enjoying the long walks.
It's very reasonably priced. My daughter and I had a twin room, which was quite large and had a nice, new bath. We had access to a shared kitchen, dining/sitting room. They have a website: http://www.domusjulia.it/

Our family had a great experience renting from Tim Pearson at realrome.com. I am sure you will find an apartment rental more economical than two hotel rooms.
Good locations include the Campo de' Fiori and Piazza Navonna/Piazza della Rotunda (Pantheon) neighborhoods. Trastevere is farther from the major sights but is linked by good public transportation and is a nice neighborhood

Always anxious to help out other families of 5! (Looking for places in Germany myself.)
We stayed in a VRBO unit on the via Capielerri, off the Campo dei Fiori.

The price was reasonable and the accomodations were not luxurious, but were fine. The location was great. The bedroom has a large bed and a twin. The living room has a pull out couch.

You could try BonCompagni Suites http://www.boncompagnisuite.com/, which is just a couple of blocks from the Via Veneto. Location is not exactly central - but they have a family suite that will sleep 5 easily. We stayed there right after New Year's, and whilst it was not luxurious by any means, it was more than adequate. THere was a small tv room w/ a sofa, a huge bedroom w/ double bed & single bed, a smaller bedroom w/ 2 twins, bathroom, tiny kitchen & dining room. The staff were extremely helpful too. I think we paid only 140 euros. Someone told me prices have gone up this year, but I think you should still be able to stay within your budget. What I didn't like about the room was the long walk to the main sights - but my children are 3 & 5 so going around the corner can be a long walk. If you get the address, you can map it on Google maps and see what you think for your family. Good luck.

I would second the recommendation to look on Slow Trav for reviews, or this thread may be useful http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...=Doh&fid=2.
We stayed in Comfort Italia's Pellegrino apt. and were very happy.

Another option:

We (4 adults and a 22 month old) stayed in the Green apartment and we're very happy. The location is great (around the corner from Campo di Fiori) and the apartment was very clean and was in good shape. It even has a washer and dryer.

ALergo Santa CHiara has an apartment type suite that acvommodates a family of 5. We stayed in their regular family suite (for 4) but down the hall, a family with 3 teenage girls was staying in the apartment suite (has kitchen, living room).
