Rome - bus and train questions

My husband and I will be staying in Rome near Piazza Navona on Viol delle Grotte. We are wondering what the best way to do the following are:

1. We will arrive by train from Cinque Terre. Do we go to the central train station then take a bus? cab? to our apartment? Anyone know how long that will take?

2. Also, we are taking a day trip to Naples. Do we take a bus to the train station? Anyone know where the closest bus station/stop is? We are planning on an early morning train to Naples.

Thanks for your help. We are getting excited about this trip and just have these few questions about Rome.

Unless you're on a really tight budget, I'd just take a cab from Termini to your apartment. How long will depend on the day and time you arrive, how long the line/wait for taxis is, etc.

I'd probably cab back to Termini for the train to Naples, but someone should be able to tell you which bus would work. I know there's a bus stop near the south end of Piazza Navona. Line 64, I think. Watch for pickpockets.

1) If it's not too late at night and you don't have a lot of luggage, then take a bus to your apt. Otherwise, take a taxi.

2) Yes, take a bus to the train station for your day trip to Naples.

Assuming you meant Vicolo Delle Grotte, walk up to Corso Vittorio Emanuele and catch the #40 or the #64:

I disagree, again depending on the amount of luggage and the time of day/night. A taxi could be €25 after tip, whereas a bus is €1.00 per person and just about as quick.

I did mean Vicolo delle Grotte. Thanks for the site bardo1.

We will be arriving in Rome mid-afternoon and we only have 2 medium sized duffel bags and a backpack. 25 Euro for a cab ride is certainly within our budget, but if the bus is the about the same amount of time, that may be a big enough difference for us to take the bus.

As for our trip to Naples, we are going to a train that departs around 8:30 am and we will return to Rome around 10 pm.

Should we plan on taking a taxi back after 10 pm?

From Vicolo delle Grotte, it's only about 300 meters to Largo Argentina, where you can catch the #40 or #64 buses as bardo1 mentions. It may be a tad closer than the Corso Vittorio Emanuele. In this post on riding buses, there are pictures of one of the bus stops in Largo Argentina: http://tinyurl.com/rome-bus

Also at Largo Argentina are two kiosks for bus tickets - an example on how to use them is here: http://tinyurl.com/bus-kiosk. You'll also find a taxi stand in Largo Argentina if you feel you need one. A taxi to and from this area to the train station SHOULD BE no more than €14-16.

Based on your luggage situation, it sounds as if you could use the buses. I'd recommend the 40 over the 64. It makes less stops (an express bus) and the 64 is known as the "pickpocket" bus as it goes to and from the Vatican and has an infamous reputation!

As far as returning at 22:00; yes, you can easily ride the buses at this time. Those runs are still active and the night buses usually do not start until around midnight. Seeing how you are arriving at Roma Termini, you might also look at this post: http://tinyurl.com/roma-termini . Good Luck!

We are also staying near Piazza Navona on Via Governo Vecchio.

What time do the buses start running?
It looks like our best bet is to go to Corso Vittorio Emanuele and take the 40 (or 64) to Termini in the morning to catch an 8:30 train? How long would that take and does it cost 1 Euro?
Is there the possibility to buy packets of bus tickets at a discounted rate?

kwren, you can buy tickets for various terms - for example, a daily ticket is only €4, a three-day is €11 and a one-week ticket is €16. Read about the types of tickets here: http://tinyurl.com/rome-tickets

The "day" buses usually start at 05:30- 05:45, but times do vary by route. Most buses run until 12 midnight and then the "night" buses take over.

As you say, the #40 and 64 are the best buses for you to get to Roma Termini. Depenging on traffic - and how full the bus is - it would take 12-18 minutes from the stop on Corso Vittorio Emanuele. And yes, if you just want to make that one ride, it would be €1. You might visit the links in my above post for more details on the buses and metro in Rome. Good Luck!
