Romantic Road
My wife and I plan to be in Germany late September to early October (10 days). We are considering driving at least part of the Romantic Road south from Würzburg. Will we have any difficulty getting reservations at a Hotel Garni or Pension? My concern is that there may be many people traveling to attend Oktoberfest.

Depends on the village. The prettiest of all is Rothenburg, which will probably have the highest demand. Best advice is to fax now to learn what availability there is. Do not wait until you're there, when you may be unpleasantly surprised and having the ongoing task of finding rooms.

I drove the Romantic Road last September and had little trouble finding hotel rooms. Each little town seems peppered with B&Bs advertising "Zimmer Frei." I suspect that Oktoberfest will be could pose a problem in Munich and environs, though, so book ahead. Also make advance reservations if there are specific hotels/B&Bs you'd like to stay in, regardless of the town. If you've heard good things about a particular establishment, chances are many other people have, too. Anyway, enjoy. I loved the Romantic Road and felt it deserved its high tourist quotient. It's especially lovely in autumn -- yellow, orange, red leaves everywhere.

hi there,
dont agree with Russel. Shure is Rothenburg is nice and a big tourist trap. So there are lot of people. But late Sept/Oct will be no problem finding any acco. My advice is allways the tourist office. The know where to find a place, have hotels from cheap to luxus, did the reservation for You if You want, have a lot of other helpful things, speak english ...
Munich? Octoberfest this year? Forget it! I think You have to get about 50 or more km outside Munich to find a bed to sleep. Also here I would recommand the TI. For to phone or fax one hotel after the other after by yourself is no fun.
Anyway
have fun and by carefull with the Bavarian beer

Oktoberfest in Munich is in September, did you know that? ( 16.09 - 30.09).You will have trouble in Munich, there is not only Oktoberfest but also a very big fashion fair.(Modewoche). Anywhere else you won't have any problems finding a hotel. The tourist season is over on the Romantic Road. Have a nice time.

You should have no problems finding suitable accommodations along the Romantic Road in Sep/Oct time frame. Of course the closer you get to Munich (during Oktoberfest) the more difficult it becomes. This page will give you an idea of some of the lodging options you will have if you overnight in Rothenburg o.d.T. You don't have to book ahead but if you decide you want to stay at a particular place and know when you will be there - it might be a good idea to go ahead and make a reservation. It's just one less thing to concern yourself with and you can arrive later in the afternoon and not have to look around when you get there. - http://www.bavariaben.com/fzfrothenburg.html
