Resuscitate old pay-as-you-go SIM cards?

I've got a Vodafone UK pay-as-you-go SIM card from last summer. I definitely recall that the ten pounds, or whatever, that I loaded onto it at the time had an expiration date.

Question, though: what about the phone number itself? I'm wondering if I can take the card out of the nasty low-quality Vodafone smartphone I bought then, cut it down to fit my current US iPhone, and then just buy a new top-up when I reach the UK.

Why don't you check the Vodaphone site? Surely they will have the terms and conditions regarding your SIM as well as a FAQ page...

In general, it's either 180 days or a full year on most UK sim cards. Are you say in either the USA or Canada? If you have a gsm phone with the USA/Canadian 1900 mhz. band, turn the phone on. Since vodafone allows roaming in the USA/Canada. If the sim cqrd is still viable, it will register on an American or Canadian carrier say T Mobile USA or AT&T ub tge YSA, /send yourself a text message for 35p or whatever it is. Voila, the 180 day period is now extended. If you get the message simn card registration failed, the sim card has expired. When you arrive in London, call vodafone UK. You might be able t transfer the remaining balance to a new sim card although oftentimes the credit is lost and gone forever. Another reason to keep as little money on the account as possible and to periodically send 1 text message as suggested above to prevent the demise of the sim card. If you're in Australia, since the Aussie gsm carriers operate on the same frequencies as in the UK, just turn on the phone and follow the above.

Done.

ParisAmsterdam -- Yes, I searched the Vodafone site before I posted my question, but I don't see the information anywhere there.

xyz123 -- Thanks, that was a big help! I was able to send myself a text message, and since I've had the card just a couple of days under six months, I may have been just barely in time.

By the way -- In retrospect, I now think that the *data access* that I bought last summer is what had a short expiration date (30 days, I think).
