Restaurant Suggestions in Madrid and Lisbon
Suggest for restaurants for Salamanca area of Madrid near the Hotel Principe de Vergara.
Also in Lisbon near the Hotel Le Meridien Park Atlantic.
These would be for dinner as we are on a tour and will be back at night for dinner.
Sitdown restaurants please.

Hi maryanne,
Near the NH Príncipe de Vergara, I would walk to the new branch of St. James, on the corner of María de Molina at Núñez de Balboa 123 (my old stomping ground). It's just two blocks from the hotel.
St. James has been frequented for years by the denizens of the Salamanca district who love their paella. The original St. James, on Juan Bravo, opened its sister restaurant here fairly recently. The quality isvery high. 8 types of rice dishes. Nice ice cream desserts. Upscale dining.

If you're not in the mood for paella or seafood, there's the lovely, Basque-Navarran bistro, "El Almirez", on Maldonado 5, between Lagasca and Claudio Coello, but 8 blocks away from the hotel.
It's charming, also popular with those-in-the-know, food wise, the welcome is warm and decor inviting.
We stopped by 2 weeks ago and were won over. Worth the walk. A favorite of the ABC restaurant critic.
Delicious croquettes, "pisto con huevo roto y espárragos verdes" (their take on ratatouille) and great red meats.
Closed Sun. Opens for dinner at 9.

i like el séptimo, on diego de leon, up from the american embassy, at any time of day.
they are open all morning for cake and coffee (fabulous appel strudel and mango tartine), lunch and dinner.
reasonable prices, interestign variety, good salads and a break from traditional spanish cuisine.

Thank you so much. Just what I was looking for some paella. Only had it 2 times in my life in San Francisco and St. Augustine,Fla., but enjoyed it so much. Also I am an ice cream lover.
Maribel, do you know that hotel? Always wonder about the hotels when you have booked with a tour.
I have checked your excellent info about Spain.
From the mention of the American Embassy it must be close by the hotel.

Hi maryanne,
I do know the NH Príncipe de Vergara, and you'll be fine. The NH chain does a good job. We have stayed frequently in their other nice property in the Salamanca quarter, the NH Lagasca.
The NH P de V is about 7 blocks east of the American Embassy.

El Septimo was very good. Thanks to you, Lincasanova First time we went 4:30pm. Had only arrived from the US a few hours later and were hungry. Open,but not serving new diners, although people were eating. Next night arrived much later.
To Maribel, we enjoyed the hotel. Desk people very helpful. Did not get to the St. James as not open when we got there around 8pm. Realize Spanish don't get started with their dinner that early, Found the restaurant with no problem. Did get my paella in Madrid before we left to come back home.

i am so glad you were able to enjoy this simple but different restaurant.
seems you caught the very tail end of LUNCH.. glad you could get in the next day.
