Hello Richard, below is a portion of my LONG posting from June 1998 from our trip to Italy in May:

RESTAURANTS: All our meals were great. We averaged $40 for a full meal and a bottle of house wine. Best meals were in Naples, although the pizza in Milan was excellent (the cook must have been from Naples).

ROME: "Osteria ar Galletto," Piazza Farnese, 102; tel: 06-686-1714; recommended by Cheap Eats in Italy. Very good meal.
"La Fraschetta," Via S. Agnese in Agone, 21, Piazza Navona; tele: 06/688-06806; "Pizza Fantasy," Via di Pietra, 85, tele: 67-80-973.

I really liked the restaurant recommended by Cheap Eats, so you may want to buy the book, or at least take some notes at a bookstore (such as Borders or Barnes and Nobles).

Have a GREAT time!
I went to Rome in June 1997 and stayed in Capi Flori (sp?) close to Plazzo Navarone (sp? Not a great speller nor remembering. Hope you get it if you are familiar with Rome map. Anyway there were more than twenty restaurants around my hotel. I tried about ten of them and they all were wonderful and cheap....at my time, maybe around $10. which was most reasonable price for a dinner..and even lunch. Very few times, I went for their pizza slices at fast restaurants which were wonderful as well.

Try their ice cream! That is a BIG MUST. Best ice cream I have ever had...better than Americans'. Most ice cream would be selling at booth or ice cream shops. Plazzo Navarone has some like that.

Have Fun!

Rome Restaurants: Da Sabatino, Via del Boschetto 28 inexpensive - roman trattoria draws neighborhood crowd - carbonara, satimbocca - pays very little

Trattoria al Gran Sasso, Via della Ripetta (near Piazza del Popolo) inexpensive - simple trattoria w/good food.

trattoria la campana, vicolo della campana 18 (near pantheon) moderate to moderately expensive. old eatery w/dishes such as puntarelle, pasta con crema di carciofi (artichoke-cream sauce) & vignarola (raw veg stew).

Armando al Pantheon, Salita de Crescenzi (rt. of the Pantheon asyou face it) moderately inexpnesive - very good carbonara & daily specials such as rigatoni can pajata (wed), gnocchi (thurs) cod (fri) & tripe (sat)

Fratelli Paladini, Via del Governo Vecchio 28 - very inexpensive - panini's are great because the bread is baked right here & topped w/ingredients you select: fresh cheese, cold cuts, veg.

Enoteca Il Piccolo, Via del Governo Vecchio 74 - moderately inexpensive - people watch w/good selection of wines & salami. warm place w/ jazz playing in the background.

La Carbonara, Campo dei Fiori 23 - moderate to moderately expensive - outdoor tables - try the gnocchi al surgo - vegetables are also excellent

Uno, 1E Via del Portico d'Ottavia - fully kosher

Osteria dei Nostri Tempi, Via Luca della Robbia 34 - moderately inexpensive - drink wine by glass or bottle accompanied by as much or as little food asyou want. choose from gnocchi, crepes, soups and salumi.

that should get you though!

Our favorite little neighborhood restaurant is Ristorante Abruzzi, 1 via Vaccaro ... at the end of Piazza Santi Apostoli just off of the Piazza Venezia, just over near Trajan's column.

Cannelloni Abruzzi is the house specialty but you must get there early to get some.

More restaurants, ours and others, at http://twenj.com/romerests.htm

Ed

I agree with the earlier posting about the Cheap Eats book - it was invaluable. It gives full descriptions about pizzerias, gelaterias, trattorias, etc. We ate outside at Ostaria da Nerbone quite near the Coliseum in Rome (reserve a table); it was wonderful and quite reasonably priced with a view of the Coliseum.

Rome, itself has about 500 resturants. And there was about twenty resturants around my hotel in Capi Flora. I tried ten out of those. All were wonderful in their own ways. I also tried two in Piazzano Navorona (Sp?) and both were wonderful as well.

Recommand to try ice cream which was the best one I have ever had....still curve it.

Have fun!
