Kate, in most cases, you should be able to do it but there is a drop off charge by just about every rental car agency. Starts at about $150 and can be higher.
Contact Andrew at www.gemut.com and ask them. They do volume business with AutoEurope and usually can get a discounted rate. They come highly recommended here on Fodor's.

spin off question... with the price of gas and the fact that we'd really rather not drive, would trains just be an easier/cheaper option?
We really dislike driving in foreign countries, but will it just be too hard to see all the little towns if we don't rent a car? (For example, we didn't mind driving in Tuscany, but HATE driving in cities)

Kate, don't remember your itinerary. Where will you be traveling?
Sometimes, for two people, renting a car can be cheaper and definitely more flexible. But the trains are a great way to travel in Europe if you don't mind being held to a certain timetable.

Hi Betty,
Actually our itinerary is still very much up in the air (part of it will be determined by train cost/schedule or car cost, so that's why I'm doing these simultaneously). Anyway, we're thinking of something like;
3 nights in Vienna
2 nights in Salzburg
4 nights in Nuremburg (we have friends here, and we'd travel around to different areas by car)
Would you change locations and/or number of nights in certain locations? Thanks Betty, I'm going to have to start paying you as my travel agent!!

Hi K,
>3 nights in Vienna

4 nights in Nuremburg<
No need for a car from Austria.
You can train from S to N via Munich for 29E pp.
If you would rather drive to N, you can take the bus to Berchtesgaden or train to Munich and get a car in Germany.

Thanks, Kate, but there are many here that know way more than me!
I agree, for that itinerary you don't need a car. In fact, a car would probably be a nuisance for sure in Vienna and Salzburg as others have said.
I think 3 days in Vienna and 2 days in Salzburg is just right. As I remember, you were planning to do some day trips from Nuremburg.
I think it's about a 3 hour train ride from Vienna to Salzburg and a little over 3 hrs from Salzburg to Nuremburg.
Sounds like a great trip.
