Registration with local Police-Italy
Has anyone been questioned for not registering with the local police? I just found the following information on Consular site for Italy:
"Under Italian law, tourists are required to register with a local police station and obtain a ?permesso di soggiorno? (permit to stay) within eight working days of their arrival, regardless of the intended length of stay."

If you are staying in a hotel, this is handled for you.
The hotel will request your passport when you check in, and take down information from it. I doubt that they in fact report this to the police on a daily basis, but there is a record of who you are and where you are, should anyone inquire.

Here is a pretty lengthy thread on this topic, which I located by typing "permesso di soggiorno" into the text box at the top of this page.
