Questions about staying and traveling in the 14th arrondisement

We will be staying in the 14th arrondisement at the Marriott hotel. I know it's a bit further out but our budget and other circumstances led to this decision. We are also big-time walkers.

Anyways, my questions are:
1. I've read that we could possibly walk to Notredam/Latin Quarter/Luxemborg gardens (looks like that may be possible from the map), is this true?

2. Is there a Paris "metro pass" that could save us money on the metro? We will be traveling with 3 kids under 13. Any tips for using the metro system?

3. What's the best way (economical) to get from the airport to our hotel? RER?

4. Any restaurant recommendations in this area (again, economical and decent food)?

Thanks!

Enjoy your trip! My husband and I stayed in the 14th on our trip in April. We found it to be a really nice area.
1. We are walkers and we did walk from the center of Paris back to our hotel (Concorde Montparnasse) almost every night. It took us about 45 minutes walking at a decent pace. I'm not sure if your kids would be up for it.
2. We purchased the carnets of tickets so I am not sure if there is a pass.
3. We took the Eurostar so we transferred to another train and went to our hotel that way.
4. For breakfast we would eat at the hotel (it was included), for lunch we would get sandwiches or a baguette and cheese, and for dinner we would follow our noses.
Enjoy!

Your map should have a scale, so you can calculate exactly how far that walk is and determine whether it's walkable for you.

There are several kinds of metro passes, but I always just buy a carnet.

The "best" way to get to your hotel may not be the most economical. The latter is the RER.

Can't help with the restos - haven't eaten in that part of town in years.

1 - Paris is not that big (I'm a parisian and not that much a big walker but you can do easily Notredam/Latin Quarter/Luxemborg gardens)

2 - There are no group offers to travel in Paris. The best is maybe that one : http://www.ratp.fr/en/ratp/c_21894/paris-visite/...

3 - There are special buses from airport ot Denfert Rochereau or Opera if you come from Roissy or Orly, but depend on the time you arrived, you will maybe see the parisian jam (which can be hell sometime). RER are maybe the easiest and economic ways to get in Paris.

4 - To eat, go on Rue Daguerre, semi pedestrian street with lot of food shops If you can, go also on the Buttes aux Cailles area, it's like a village in Paris ^^ (and you are also not that far the chinese area, you can try some if you want, not that expensive at all)

Ps : You are really close to the parisian catacombs, if your child are not to small to visit it, it something you must see

Good area. From metro Saint Jacques you can walk to tons of places. And when you can't walk -- metro Saint Jacques is right out the front door of the hotel.

<blue>- you <i>can</i> walk to Notre Dame from the Marriott, but you probably won't want to on a daily basis, considering you'll be walking a lot between sightseeing as well</blue>
2. Is there a Paris "metro pass" that could save us money on the metro? We will be traveling with 3 kids under 13. Any tips for using the metro system?
<blue>- I didn't see where you said how many days you'd be in Paris... if you were to take only a ride into center and then back, once a day, your group could use up one carnet per day, about 12€. If you were to ride into the center, maybe one ride to get to another area, then back to hotel (3x day), then you'd spend about 18€/day (1.5 carnets). If you buy the Paris Visite pass (under 12 priced lower than adults), it would cost you about 18-23€/day (unlimited rides). The weekly pass Navigo Decouverte doesn't offer discounts for kids, and it costs 5€ to first buy the card, so it would work out to about the same as the Paris Visite in this case. the thing about a pass ticket is you buy once, and you don't have to manage all the individual tickets. Note that you must SAVE your used ticket until you've exited the metro or bus system.</blue>
3. What's the best way (economical) to get from the airport to our hotel? RER?
<blue> Yes, most economical *by person* is by RER (from CDG) - - you board at CDG/Terminal 2 and ride until Denfert Rochereau. If you want to walk a little (5-7 minutes) and can manage your bags, your hotel is just a few blocks from the RER station. You could walk from underground to the metro, but I don't think it would be any faster, and not easier. If you're arriving at Orly, you can take the Orlybus to the street level of Denfert Rochereau RER station. Note that a taxi/minivan might work out nearly as cheap and much easier for a group such as yours, rather than the total € for RER or bus tickets. Typical fares from CDG to D-R should be around 50-60€, incl per bag charge, extra pssgr charge, etc. Orly is slightly closer/cheaper. </blue>

I have stayed at this hotel a lot.

1. Yes you could walk it. It is a fairly long walk. I would use the Metro

2 I travel solo so no idea

3. RER as discussed above is great

4. Www.colleensparis.com. Click on the AA Layover hotel link on the left side. It never says it is the Marrioot but trust me it is. She has a lot of info on grocery stores, reasonable food etc.

Now my warning. Rooms are small. This is not a US Marriott. I assume you have a suite or a couple of rooms?

It is a nice hotel. I like it. Especially since I stay free on my reward points
