Question about Castle Hohenwerfen in Austria

Based on Ira's trip report, I'd love to visit this castle for the falconry demonstrations. Does anyone know if we can get there by using public transportation? I've done some research and can't seem to find the answer. Thanks in advance!

You will find rail connections for Austrian Rail at www.oebb.at . Make Werfen your destination (not Hohenwerfen). Werfen is the name of the town on which northern edge the castle is located.

You can also catch aa wonderful falconry demonstration (performed by young people in mediaeval costume) at the Chateau de Beaucaire,in season. Beaucaire is situated between Nimes and Avignon.

Yes, easily. Werfen is an easy train ride from Salzburg. Just check that your trip plans coincide with the castle's schedule.

FWIW, there are many places to view birds of prey demonstrations. In addition to the Werfen castle, there is the Eagle Reserve (don't confuse that with Eagle's Nest) in Bavaria, the Adlerei not far from Bad Wimpfen in Baden-Wurttemberg.

Hi G,

Once you get to Werfen, there is a funicular to take you up to the castle.

See www.salzburg-burgen.at/en/werfen/

Fantastic! Thanks guys. I'm in the beginning stages of researching our Salzburg - Vienna - Hallstatt - Prague trip, so there'll be more questions to come...

I, too, was interested in the falconry demonstration. Because we are going in April of 2009 (and I had read on one website that demonstrations did not begin until May), I e-mailed the castle. The response was swift, indicating that "we start into the new season at 21. 03 . 2008. the flight demonstrations are daily at 11:00 and 15.00 uhr all season long." The e-mail had a wonderful attachment to "help" me - all in German. I don't speak German, but the pictures are awfully pretty!
