public transport in Paris
My wife and I will be in Paris this summer. Is there an equivalent for public transportation like the Oyster Card in London? While in England we enjoy the ease of using the tubes and buses with a swipe of just one pre-loaded Oyster Card. Does the Metro and buses in Paris have a similar card?

I don't know the oyster card.
In Paris you ahve the Navigo, don't know how easy it is to get a Navigo card (you neeed a photo etc), but heard it is only interesting if you are a full week and not a moving week : Navigo is valid from a specific day to another (like Sunday to saturday, so if you arrive on a wednesday and leave a tuesday you need two weeks of Navigo to cover the period).
For me, I usually stay 2-3 days, I used to get a 'carnet' wich means a bundle of 10 loose tickets.

Most folks find themselves riding the metro less often than they think I think - Paris is very walkable - many sights are clustered together - pariswat has it right - most folks will find buying carnets - 10 tickets at once that can be shared with anyone else - are the best deal for most - but there is no nifty thing like the Oyster Card TMK - except the Navigo which runs like pariswat says - I think it may be Monday thru Sunday so if that comports with your trip maybe buy that - bring a photo - several metro trips would make gthe Navigo Pass pay off I think.

People always seem to think "Metro" rather than "bus". The bus system is wonderful to even sightsee. And the carnet tickets are good on buses also.
I think the Navigo is not sold for that particular week after Wednesday, but there are days when you might use transport a number of times and the Navigo is a big saver. It does depend on the days you are there.

--Paris major sites are FAR more walkable than are London ones. It's a very concise historic center.
--Navigo passes can work well depending on day you arrive and number of days you are there but...
--Given walkability of Paris, then the carnet, the aforementioned deal for the 10 tix, seems to work out darn well for most. If you run out, you buy more. If you don't, it's not a great loss. The ones you have left over work again the next time you return. And you will return.

For best deals IF you want to visit a ton of art museums, I do recommend the Carte Musee. Do not buy ANY PASS ONLINE. No need. No discounts.

The Paris transportation week runs from Monday to Sunday. Just about anybody will find a Navigo pass worthwhile if they start using it no later than Wednesday.
