Pompey visit- is the volcano safe?

Off to Italy. Visit to old italian city of Pompey is on my itinerary. Is the volcano safe or is it expected to erupt like that other one? I would any last minute news on this.
Falcon,

Pompeii is quite a distance from Vesuvius. Vesuvius is an active volcano that is due to erupt but it should not be a surprise as it is monitored carefully. I visited Vesuvius and actually climbed to the crater of the volcano in February. Both the volcano, Herculaneum and Pompeii made lasting impressions. They certainly would not permit anyone to get close if there was danger of eruption.

Have Fun

Rhonda, I think maybe the former residents of Pompeii might say their city wasn't far enough away.... But, Mt. Etna on Sicily has been a very active volcano for centuries. Vesuvius will blow again, but I wouldn't worry overmuch. Just check the current conditions & have fun....

Take the Circumvesuviana train (it runs from Naples to Sorrento) Get off at the Herculeum stop and you can take a bus up Vesuvius from there. They let you out and you have to pay a guide to go the rest of the way. Estimated walking distance 15-30 minutes. Wear good walking shoes and take a sweater. Rough, loose terrain.

Falcon,
Pompey was a Roman general and statesman. You are safe from eruptions.
