Please help me plan this trip to Istria & Slovenia

I have gotten some excellent advice about our upcoming trip to Trieste, Slovenia and Istria. My biggest problem right now seems to be time issues. We only have Monday thru Friday, so we know we're only going to get a tiny taste of the area, but that'll have to be enough this time around.
One start has us flying into Venice, and taking the train to Trieste for the day and night. Next day we drive to Postnja caves and Lake Bled where we spend the night. Next day we hit Ljubliana but only spend half a day and drive into Istria for the night. We spend the next day seeing 1 or 2 towns that have been recommended here. The last day we would love to go to Plitvice lakes. Is their anything we can cut out, so we'll have time for that? And by "cut out", I mean, I've made it more special in my head then it really is! With the driving times, do we have enough time to see the lakes from Istria and somehow get back to Venice by Saturday afternoon? We start a cruise then.
Our alternative is to fly into Ljubljiana. Swiss flies there. We would save Trieste for last and train back to Venice. Our problem is we don't know if we're going to be spending so much time driving that we barely see anything! Any help will be greatly appreciated.

SloJan, Thanks for your advice. So if we skip Trieste, do you think we have time to squeeze in Plitvice? The book I have here is on Croatia & Slovenia. I have no idea about Trieste. I have read that people visit there in conjunction with a trip to Cro & Slo. Its also a 2 hour train ride from there to Venice, which is where we have to be by Saturday afternoon. If we skip it, where is the best town for us to end up in so we can take some form of transportation into Venice. Thanks.

What happened to all the Croatia people. Last year you had to wade thru all those to find anything about OTHER countries. This year, its very slim pickens! Is it the wrong time of year to be asking or is it just not popular anymore. Sheesh, trying to get someone to answer ain't easy. Not you Slo Jan, I'm happy you answered and if you do see this, what's wrong with Trieste, or is it just not as wonderful as the other places we want to see?

Trieste is fine if you have the time. I go monthly, but if I was on a limited time frame, there are better uses of my time.

I would fly into LJ, rent a car and drive to Bled. Stay the night there and then, drive to Postojna on the way to Plivitce. Spend a day or 2 in the Plivitce area and then head NW to Istria. Visit Rovinj and spend the night. Last day, drive back to LJ, drop the car and take the train to Venice.
