Places to eat in Rome and Venice by train stations???

Hello,

We will be visiting Rome and Venice in October. Our hotels are approximately 5 mins away from the train stations in each city. I would like suggestions on where to have the best/authentic pizza in Rome and the best seafood in Venice. Also, a good recommendation for dinner would be great. I would like to stay away from the tourist traps and don't mind walking to find the very best. Names of restaurants/pizza places is appreciated.

****Has anyone tried Pizzarium near the Vatican? Thoughts??

For Venice I have some suggestions for restaurants that locals would go:

1. Trattoria Alla Rampa

Via Garibaldi
Telephone: +39 365 649 0277
Lunch only; closed Sunday

Their €13 menu’operai, a fixed worker’s menu, consists of pasta, main course, wine and coffee. Its pastas costs €10 and main dishes around €14.

2.Osteria Al Portego

Castello San Lio, 6014, 30122 Venezia, Italy
+39 041 522 9038

Osteria Al Portego has a wide selection of cichetti. If you are in for a drink, join them for their happy hour and choose from their large selection of wines.

3. Anna & Vilma's Home Restaurant

Located in the heart of the Lagoon, they offer fish that arrives every morning at the Rialto market or in Campo Santa Margherita or the Giudecca. For other specialties, such as moeche, they will buy it directly from the fisherman.

4.3. Ristorante Dalla Marisa

Cannaregio, 652, 30171 Venezia, Italy
+39 041 720211
Featured in Jamie Oliver's travel magazine, they do not have an a la carte menu but instead offers a set menu. If you are in for good seafood where the locals would go, it is the right place.

You can get a good pizza in many places in Rome, and anyway I'm not a big pizza eater, so I'll pass on that. By the way, pizzas are traditionally eaten only in the evening, so places serving pizza at lunch may be very touristy.

For dinners in Rome, I like the Taverna degli Amici di Tor Margana.

Also, for seafood in Rome, Cantina Cantarini, which has a "land menu" from Monday through Thursday lunch, and a "sea" menu from Thursday dinner through Saturday (closed Sunday). I've only tried their seafood menu, for which the whole fish (sold by weight) is really excellent. The price on the menu for whole fish will be per hectogram, about 1/4 pound, before cleaning. You should ask approximately how much the fish weighs and how many people it will serve. There are ten hectograms in a kilogram.

The Trattoria Monti is near the train station, and is highly recommended. It serves the traditional cuisine of Le Marche, which is the region where I live, and which is famous for its quality in Italy. It's rather pricey, and since I can eat enjoy that cuisine any day of the week, I haven't been in a hurry to eat at Trattoria Monti. However, people whose judgement I trust assure me that it's excellent, and one day I'll go there.

I suggest you learn about the traditional cuisine of Rome and Venice before your trip. With the exception of places like Trattoria Monti, which specialize in the cuisine of a different region, you'll do a lot better in both Rome and Venice ordering local specialties instead of something that's really a specialty of a different region.

if you walk [or get the bus] down the via Nazionale and get off near the Quirinale and walk south, you will find any number of interesting local restaurants on and around the via dei Serpenti in the area of Rome called "Monti".

There are nice little streets with local businesses and a very nice square with a fountain opposite the church of Santa Maria ai Monti which gives the area its name. We stayed in an apartment in the Via dei Serpenti for a week and ate at a different restaurant in this area every night, and never had a dud meal, even at this place, which did good pizzas:

the ratings aren't good but that's mostly because of a grumpy waiter, not the food!

well within strolling distance for an evening I would have thought.

Venice: near Santa Lucia Station, Osteria Al Cicheto.

There are some good restaurants around the Lista di Bari. Walk over Scalzi Bridge, go straight ahead at the Mephisto shoe store, turn left at souvenir shop venturing toward
Campo San Simeon.

There are lots of restaurants along the Fondamente Cannaregio near Ponte Tre Archi.

Castelo, Via Garibaldi are NOT anywhere near Santa Lucia Station.

In fact, the Via Garibaldi is probably as far as you can get from the train station in Venice!

I should warn you that the Cantina Cantarini is not by any means elegant. The tables are covered in butcher's paper, the tables aren't much more than picnic tables, and there's a big refrigerated chest in the middle of the room. I haven't been there in about five years, so maybe it's been yuppified.
