Head for the nearby Rue de Rivioli and head east and you will find many food stores from supermarkets to boulangeries to wine shops to delics, etc. Steps away really.

I would go to Gerard Mulot. Probably the closest is 76 rue de Seine. Delicious take out foods and pastries.

I'd just pick up some street/takeout food by those zillions of vendors around place St Michel and rue de la Huchette, or else just out of the carts or shops behind Notre Dame.

I love the Square du Vert Galant but the times I've been there - I luv just luv to picnic outside with appetizing views - but at times the ubiquitous clochards (alcoholics or wine bags as French are like to call them, kind of ruin it for me. Hopefully it will not be the case for you.

I think the only place you can 'spread out' is on the concrete bank closer to water level... otherwise, it will be a bench in the garden itself... The water level is frequented by all sorts both innocent and less so, haven't seen anyone bother anyone else however.
