Parking rental car while traveling in Slovenia
My wife and I are hoping to tour Slovenia via rental car in early September. My main concern is being able to find parking when visiting the popular sites. We were thinkng of using Ljubljana as a "central point" to travel from, but most of the downtown hotels don't have parking available (or very few spaces at a high price). Can anyone comment on parking in general? Also, specifically Ljubljana - is public parking likely to be available in the dowtown area? Thank you. Jim

Generally parking in Slovenia is not a problem outside the centres of major towns and even in most centres.
Ljubljana's central district, though, is a different case. Finding a (cheap) parking spot there is a big problem during office hours on weekdays. All street parking in the city center is pay-and-display and limited to a maximum of 2 hours and it costs €0.70 per hour. However it's only limited Mo-Fr 8am-6pm and Sa 8am-1pm. Outside of those times it's unlimited and free. So if you have the car only when visiting places outside Ljubljana, you can use street parking if you leave early enough (8am). Watch out you don't overstay though, traffic wardens are common.
You could park your car in one of the many parking garages, however they are also expensive, but have much cheaper night-time prices and some have more convenient 24-hour prices (although still steep at around €30 per day).
Or you could stay in one of the hotels outside the city center, that will make parking a lot easier. Also, street parking is free outside of the city center, so you could try and find a parking space there.
