Paris RER tickets - do they have to be purchased day of travel?

I plan to purchase a roundtrip RER ticket from central Paris to Versailles in July. Do I have to purchase it the day of travel or can I purchase it a few days prior?

Thank you

Once you purchase a billet Origine-Destination or point to point tickets used for RER travel, they are valid forever; they never expire.

The same timeless concept applies to the ticket t+ for travel within zone 1 on the RER.

All Métro and RER paper tickets are permanently valid. This is true even if ticket prices are changed. The paper tickets you buy on on trip to Paris can be used on the next trip, too.

I've used metro tickets that are years old - the old yellow ones even still work. Ditto RER.

Hi K,

Good advice above.

Remember to take the RER C5 to Versailles Rive Gauche

Enjoy your visit.

Will I have the option to buy one round trip zone 4 - or do I just purchase two zone 4 tickets per person? Thanks

You cannot but a single ticket to a zone. The exception is a ticket t+ which is valid only for the RER travel in zone 1.

Beyond zone 1, RER tickets are sold point to point only. If you are going to a point which happens to be within the zone 4 limit, the ticket you purchase will station specific. These tickets are called billet Origine-Destination and may be used going either direction between the two named stations.
