One way car rentals

Does anybody have any suggestions on how to avoid the $50 drop off charge that car rental agencies charge for one-way rentals? Help and Thanks!

We weren't charged that in France. We used a car company out of the Let's Go France book (can I say that on this web site?. And, it was cheap! $190 for a week

You might try Auto Europe. They have a web site. I did not pay extra last summer for a one-way rental.
While I do not know their policies, my experience with Hertz is that if you pick up and drop off in the same country (different cities) in Europe, there is no drop charge. Drop in a different country and there will be one -- and it can be considerably more than $50.

My experience with Hertz, Avis and Europcar in Spain over the past many years is that there is no drop off charge, as bo_jack has noted. Every summer we pick up our car in Madrid and return to Barcelona or vice-versa (or at times to Malaga) without incurring any additional fee.
If you are dropping off in another country (in our case in Portugal or France), an additional charge would be levied.
