october trip to Nice & Provence
we are considering spending 6 nights in this area at end of october [apologies to those who've responded to my Krakow thread, we can't decide between there, south of France, or Tuscany!] and would appreciate some help.
The preliminary itinerary is:
Day 1 : arrive Nice mid afternoon and check -in - for 2 nights - any suggestions for hotel around the E100 per room mark near the promenade des anglais? [and yes I've tried searching fodor's but the search engine keeps giving me a B&B in Slovakia!]
Day 3 - hire car and drive up into Provence - not sure where to make for that time of year, though I have seen St. Remy and the Luberon highly spoken. Stay 2/3 nights.
Day 6 - drive down to the camargue and spend night there [or to Arles?]
Day 7 - home from Marseilles -[late pm flight so we have all day]
We are 2 adults plus "old" teenagers [19 & 15] who will endure museums, like eating, shopping, some walking, wildlife [hence the Camargue].
any comments? [that's tempting fate!]

Try venere.com for hotels. October is mid to low season, and some nice hotels should be within your budget.
"Up into Provence"--what does that mean? In Nice you will already be in Provence, but it's probably the western area you want to visit. So...from Nice head over to the Lubéron and spend a few nights while seeing Bonnieux, Ménerbes, Gordes, etc. From there head to St-Rémy for a few hours, then go on to the Camargue and spend the night. That should give you a nice taste of Provence.

Dear Underhill -thanks for the help - where would you stay in the luberon? - I have e-mailed the hotel du soleil in St. Remy thinking to use that as a base - do you disagree? and if so, why? Ann

In the Luberon, we really like La Ferme de la Huppe, an inn converted from an old farmhouse. The feel is rustic, but all the modern creature comforts are there. The restaurant is excellent, as is the pool.
The hotel is on a side road down from Gordes, which makes for a peaceful setting--but the main road that connects the Lubéron hill villages is close at hand.
St-Rémy is also an excellent place to stay, central for quite a few major sights: Les Baux, Arles, the Camargue, Beaucaire/Tarascon, and the Pont du Gard.
