Normandy in Dec. or Jan.

Is Dec. or Jan. a good time to visit the Normandy American Cemetary? I want to visit the grave of someone buried there and visit the beach and other battlefield sites. Jim

Anytime is a worthy time to visit the American cemetary. That said, Normandy is pretty grim weather-wise in mid-winter. There will probably be few tourists and the place will be wind-swept, gray, and cold, but perhaps that is a fitting backdrop for your intended visit.

Be aware that some hotels and other things you might want to see may be closed for the season. Even at the end of Oct. we found things closing up.

Cold, wet, and windy. Make sure you bring appropriate outdoor gear.

On the plus side, the lack of tourists can be nice, and the local cuisine favors the hearty appetite. Hotels and restaurants that are open will be less expensive as well.

My wife and I were there this summer and it was well worth the trip. We stayed in Bayeux at the D'Arrogues and found it and the town (cathedral and famous tapestry) worthwhile. A nice town with nice people and nice restaurants.

Bundle up! You won't find much open on the coast itself (Deauville, Trouville, etc.), but Bayeux is a great inland base. FYI: Chateau d'Argouges (correct spelling) is a great place to stay in Bayeux. The hotel is well described in the Karen Brown book.

Be sure to visit the Peace Museum in Caen (preferably before visiting the landing beaches) for a terrific exhibit on the invasion.
