nice-monaco-st tropez
Family of four planning a trip to cote d'azur. Can anyone advise if we can travel entirely by train up and down the coast including say Antibes? and is rail travel expensive

Yes you can. We are taking the same trip but are using a rental. there is just too much to see in the area. It seems that they are all about 1-2 hrs from each other by train. Ill bet that a car rental is not much more expensive than taking the train for 4 people and you would get to see more. Maybe finding a central place and taking day trips from there would be an alternative.

Much of the coast is easily accessible by train; including Monaco, Nice, Cannes, Juan les Pins, Antibes and other places, but not St Tropez. We usually drive there, but I've heard there are boats too; from St Maxime and maybe from Cannes too. If you do a search here, you'll find more information on this.

We took the train from Cannes to Monaco for a day trip, but were very glad to have a rental car so we could visit the hill towns, especially St. Paul de Vence.
I would definitely check into a rental car but train travel is easy and not expensive.

How many days do you plan to be on the Cote d'Azur? If less then 7-days, car rental can be expensive. But you have to compare this to daily train tickets for 4 along the coast. I believe there is a "day pass" where you can hop on/hop off any number of times - again ascertain this price and compare with car rental.
While the trains are good when you have a direct route, getting to the hill towns isn't always that easy. There are buses from Nice that go to some of these towns, but I can't personally tell you which, nor the costs.
It's always nice to have a car as you're not tied to train schedules and when getting to a place just how far you have to walk to the actual place you want to visit. However, depending on the hotel you will be staying, try to find one that provides free parking, otherwise, parking can easily run $20+/nt.
You've got some research to do to determine the costs and which benefits you and your family.
