New Year's fireworks on the Champs Elysées

The theme of this year's audiovisual spectacle on the Champs Elysées will be the candidacy of Paris for the 2024 Olympic games. The avenue is scheduled to be closed to traffic starting at 9pm, and there will be 5 giant screens along the street showing various images of the history of Paris.

Starting at 11pm, an optical illusion show will be projected on the Arc de Triomphe. The main show begins at 11:40 with images of the Olympic cities since 2000, building up to the plans that Paris has for the Olympics. The fireworks will of course begin at midnight.

500,000 spectators are expected, under the protection of 2000 members of the security forces.

As usual, there will be partial service on the metro and RER all night, and all transportation in the entire metropolitan region will be free from 5 pm on the 31st to noon on January 1st.

Almost makes the 600€ pp dinner at L'oiseau Blanc worth it. If only I didn't have to dress up.

Well, last year everything was cancelled due to the recent terrorist attacks, so keep an eye on the news.

I did not realize that Paris is bidding for upcoming Olympics. It would be great to see the Olympics back in Paris. I am sure tonight's fireworks will be spectacular.

We are New Years Eve party poopers as we always hope for rain. Our dogs are terrified of fireworks and people here set them off from about 6pm to 1am...but we will be drinking to help us cope!

Happy New Year to everyone and all the best for a prosperous 2017!

See the Olympics back in Paris? Surely you haven't seen them there, they haven't been there in close to 100 years.

It will be the 100th anniversary if Paris gets them for 2024.

Christina, do you have to take everything so literally? Jeez. Thanks Kerouac...the 100th anniversary would be very cool. Will look forward to the announcement from the IOC!

No, I am at home where it is warm. It is too cold tonight!

You might find it live on the net somewhere. I know that the news channel BFM-TV is broadcasting it live, but not necessarily on the internet.

The fog is intense in the Dordogne, has been all day. Can't even see the 5 streetlights down outside the mayor's office from our perch just above it. Wimped out on going to NYE dinner in Les Eyzies with our old car, which does not have great fog or highbeam lights, so friends with a much better car came and picked us up. No fireworks around here, just a plentiful meal with lots of nice people of something like 9 different nationalities. Lovely evening.

Bonne année, kerouac.

I watched the festivities on television --- quite nice. I'm sure that YouTube will have the event available.

It never fails...
Each year, YouTube insists on showing re-runs of the Bastille Day celebrations - complete with fireworks at the Tour Eiffel - as the actual New Year's Eve celebrations in Paris.

If anyone bothers to go anywhere other than the Champs-Elysees next year, prepare to be disappointed.
