My husband and I will travel to Paris for celebrating anniversary next month. Planning to stay at the left bank, St Germain des Pres (seems it's a more romantic and cultural area).... Read some positive and mixed reviews on the Hotel d'Aubusson, Hotel Montalembert, Hotel de Fleurie. What would be the best among them? And appreciate other better suggestions as well. Thank you.

The Hotel Montalembert, Majestic Group (http://www.montalembert.com/En/rate.php), would be the best, and the most expensive, of the three hotels you've listed. It is also in the 7th. The Hotel de Fleurie, in the 6th, is a three-star and will cost quite a bit less. The d'Aubusson and Montalembert are fairly comparable, but I would choose the Montalembert.

Another hotel you may want to consider is the Hotel Esprit St. Germain, 22 rue Saint Suplice in the 6th, close to St. Suplice and the Luxemburg Gardens (http://www.espritsaintgermain.com/flash/index.html). It's slightly less expensive then the Montalembert, but is very exclusive and comfortable.

Another good hotel in your category would be the Madison, on the blvd. St-Germain and across from the church of St-Germain-des-Prés. It's a 3* hotel verging on a 4* and is in a really, really good location. Rooms are very pretty; all were re-done in the spring of 2004. Rooms facing the boulevard are the largest.

My wife and I have stayed at the Pas des Calais (steps from blvd St. Germaine) and have been very happy there. Has web site which you can google. I have never stayed at the Madison but it looks very nice and is ON the blvd! Both are near famous restuarants (Deux Magots,Cafe Flore) and the metro and shopping. Nice avenue to stroll on and sit and people watch. Also close to Rue Buci with its markets.

I've stayed at the Hotel Verneuil, at 8, rue de Verneuil, just two short blocks from the Quai Voltaire and Musee D'Orsay and the Louvre is just across the Pont de Carroussel. It's a small pleasant place, great neighborhood and the street is relatively quiet at night. The nearest metro stop, St germain des Pres is about a 10 minute walk. See www.hotelverneuil.com

My vote is Villa d'Estrees in the 6th, one block from the Seine and right by the St. Michel metro stop, which will take you anywhere. The neighborhood is filled with cafes, shops, etc. -- lots of charm -- and very central. It's a wonderful hotel in your price range: http://www.paris-hotel-latin-quarter.com/index.html.

I've stayed at Hotel d'Aubusson but not the other two. It's nice and has a good breakfast and live jazz on some evenings, but I would still stay at Villa d'Estrees if I had the choice.

Thanks everyone for the valuable input (though it makes me more indecisive as all the hotels has its own upsides).

1. Hotel d'Aubusson - seems getting most popular votes and many many good reviews. However, the pictures of the rooms and bath (from the hotel's web site) does not look very charming (the color tone) and a bit tear down(true?), are those picture doing justice on the rooms?

2. Hotel Madison - will that have lots of noice as it is situated on the Boulevard St Germain? The rooms looks very beautiful and new (from pictures again).

3. Villa d'Estrees - spacious room with nice color decorated, and large bed. Not many reviews so far.

In terms of ambience, which one is more romantic?

Just see a new one : Relais Christine - beautiful hotel and rooms but at higher price than the others. Is it worth to spend the extra?

I'm sure I've read that the rooms at Relais Christine are 'inconsistent' in size/quality, espec. considering the expense.
Have you looked at Hotel Millesime and Hotel le Senat?

if the prices between Hotel d'Aubusson standard room and Hotel Madison's double (facing boulevard) is the same (both breakfast included), what will be your choice?

Villa d'Estrees offer of suite is 30euros higher and without breakfast.

yet to check out a few from the above recommended.
