Need help planning our short Venice stay in November
Husband and I are arriving by train on a Monday (early) afternoon and leaving on Wednesday (late) morning. Planning on getting a 3 day vaporetto pass. Our hotel is near San Marco. All suggestions welcome, including any "must see museums" (although we'll visit museums in Florence, so I was thinking of using our time differently in Venice)...would like to include a Gondola ride...What would you do ? Restaurant recommendations welcome too!!

Well, to start with, you only need a 48 hour vaporetto pass as it starts when you activate it on the first use. Arriving by train is the most spectacular entry to Venice in my opinion, and you can just go down the station steps to the ACTV booth below to buy your vaporetto passes.
The No.1 vaporetto stops at every landing on your way down the Grand Canal to San Marco, the No.2 stops at only a few.
If I had just 48 hours in Venice, I would not spend any time in museums at all, maybe a quick trip through the Basilica San Marco. In fact, I would keep sleep to a minimum too.

Was there in May had a wonderful time good sites below.
eurocheapo.com/venice getting around budget tips
Personally do tourist areas EARLY B4 tourist bus/crowds arrive
By the vaporetto pass break even after about 5 rides
Visit islands stay out of tourist areas when crowds are there.
Church/museum passes 8 euro or so great value amazing art
in all the churches cheap save a lot... The 4 Horses of San
Marco in the museum upstairs amazing craftmanship the oldest
thing in Venice used to crown the hippodrome in Constantinople
Torcello Island in the lagoon where it all began amazing
mosaics from 9th century early crusader church designs
throne of Atilla the Hun(alledgedly)
Fit my wife perfectly..
For food my fav spot away from the madding crowds is
Alla Zaterre overlooking the water go at 5PM you
can dine while watching all the giant cruise ships
leave a truly amazing site best uncrowded views in Venice
In may we had nice salads entress paid about 20 euros each.
Nice prices seating at Rialto restaurants among the gondolas
Pizza salads that are good from 8 euro no cover 12% service
charge so we can dine/lunch nicely there under 10 euros each.
Beware the cover(coperto)charges then tips on the cover in
fancy touristy places that can rip u off for 35% of your bill.
Osterias and Rosterias have the absolute best prices
Alla Vappoetto in San Marco has no tip decent not great food
Entrees like Gnocci from 6 euros cafeteria style...
Congrats! Have fun!

Ristorante Pizzeria Alle Zattere a Venezia ... Menù alla carta a base di carne o pesce, piatti tipici veneziani, pizze e due menù a prezzo fisso.
www.allezattere.com
Best place for water views to watch the cruise ships leave.

I just got back from 3 nights in Venice. I would have loved to have at least 1 more night. We were just starting to really enjoy the city when it was time to leave.
We did not go to any museums, unless you count the Basilica San Marco as a museum. We went to a lot of churches and really enjoyed that way of exploring the city and seeing the art work where it was intended to be instead of in a museum.
One thing we did NOT do that I wish we had was take a tour of the Grand Canal. We took the vaporetto ride down the canal, but it was so crowded we had to jockey for seats in the back as other people left. It would have been great to have been on a private boat and had someone explaining to us what we were seeing instead of trying to figure it out ourselves with a guide book. I would spend my money on this type of tour instead of the gondola ride.

We spent a little while in Venice last Christmas.
If you've got a lazy hour, here's the trip report.
