Need an advice on 10 -day itinerary
Hello,
I am planning a solo 10-day trip to France and will appreciate any thoughts on my itinarary. I am not planning to rent a car at the monent unless it is advisable:
1. Aug 30 - Arriving in Paris .
2. Sept.3 - Morning train to Normandy, staying in Normandy
3. Sept. 6 - train to Paris airport and then air to Nice
5. Sept. 10 - Air back to US from Nice.

This is my first trip to France.
I want to get a sence of a culture and people, both Paris and countryside, and not necessily visit every important musium. I'd like to have a more leisurly pace during this trip.
So here are a few questions:
1. Will my itinarary give me enough time for Normandy given that I do not plan to have a car.
2. What would be a good base to sleep in Normandy in order to see the most interesting sites. Or would I be better off making day trips to Normandy from Paris.
3. How should I spend 2.5 days in Normandy, what to see where to go.
4. I can choose to fly back from Paris or Nice. Is Nice a must to see? Are there any alternatives to 4 days is Nice.

I think you need to do some research about the places you think you'd like to go.
You say you want to spend 2-3 days in Normandy but want us to tell you where to stay and what to see. "The most interest sites" would probably be a different list for every person. For example, Honfleur is beautiful and charming but not near the D-Day beaches. In order to see both in 2-3 days, you'd need a car.
"Is Nice a must see?" Not for me, but this is your trip and not mine. "Are there alternatives to four days in Nice?" Yes, France is a big country.

Yes, consider picking up a guidebook dima to give you a better sense of what the various regions in France have to offer. I would not choose to see Nice and Normandy both in only a 10 day trip. Either region could easily amuse you for 8 days and you wont lose so much time travelling. If you haven't been to Paris before I would add on at least another day there as well. Which region you choose depends on your specific interests: are you interested in art, medieval times, beaches, war memorials, chateuxs etc.... Give us some more details and you will get better responses.

I got Rick Steves book and are studing it.
Talking about France, I am interested in arcitecture, medieval times, butiful views, good food and wine, moderately in art,etc. I was faciniated by London . Do not take me wrong but I am not interested in D-day site, not during this visit.
This is also a vacation. For every working American, those 2-3 weeks of vacation are precioius. My original plan was to go to Rome and Amalfi coast but it did not work out and I will have an opportunity to go to France. I am not sure if this clarifies the cituation. In any case, I would appreciate suggections for my itinarary. If necessary, I will be able to rent a car in Normandy.
